Fox News co-founder Roger Ailes, 77, dies

Ailes was 77. Fox News confirmed Ailes' death Thursday morning.

Roger resigned from his position last July following a series of sexual harassment allegations against him.

Elizabeth Ailes says, "I am profoundly sad and heartbroken to report that my husband, Roger Ailes, passed away this morning".

Elizabeth Ailes described him as "a loyal friend to many" in her statement on his death.

"He saw something in me and many others he hired that we never saw in ourselves, and forever changed the trajectory of thousands of people's lives".

Fox News' on-air talent took to Twitter to mourn Ailes. The fall that caused the injury had not been reported prior to Ailes' death and it was not immediately clear whether it had caused him to be hospitalized.

More than 20 women came forward before his death to accuse Ailes of sexual harassment, prompting Ailes to resign from Fox. "For decades, RA (Roger Ailes) has impacted American politics and media". Within a few years, it became the audience leader in cable news. Fox is also the subject of a U.S. Justice Department investigation, CNN and NY magazine have reported, although Reuters has not confirmed those reports.

Conservative talk radio host Laura Ingraham also posted about Ailes.

In the 2016 presidential race, Ailes parlayed his friendship with Donald Trump into a role as informal adviser for the presidential hopeful, even sitting in on debate prep for the candidate in his face-offs with Hillary Clinton.

Discussing Ailes' impact on politics and culture in the U.S., Sherman said, "One of Ailes' lasting legacies will be that for millions of Americans, news is now no longer viewed as a way to be informed about the world; it's a way of gathering information that advances your side". O'Reilly was sacked his top-rated show at Fox in April after reports surfaced that the network had settled lawsuits with five women who alleged he sexually harassed them.

He joined Fox in 1996 and helped build it into a massively influential and profitable section of Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox.

"In the years I worked with Ailes he was a great mentor, deeply patriotic, committed to Fox News and really anxious about America".

Ailes has often been embroiled in sexual harassment claims. He also helped put former President George H.W. Bush in office in part with a racially charged campaign.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is adding his voice to those mourning Fox News Channel founder Roger Ailes.
