Going to the dance: Ostapenko vs. Halep in French Open final

Going to the dance: Ostapenko vs. Halep in French Open final

She has lost just four sets at Roland Garros this year and would become the first unseeded victor since 1933 if she continues her current form.

The last player to win their debut title at Roland Garros was Gustavo Kuerten on June 8, 1997, the day Ostapenko was born.

Halep rescued three break points at the start of the second and things began to unravel for Ostapenko as she sent a forehand wide to fall further behind.

The 20-year-old has come close to winning two titles this year, losing out in the semi-finals at Auckland and the final at Charleston. The French Open could be her second in 2017.

Halep won the second set with a net-cord victor but on Saturday Ostapenko earned the key break of the third at 3-3 with her own slice of luck.

Now the 25-year-old will attempt to go one better than in 2014, when she lost narrowly to Maria Sharapova in a very tight three-setter.

Ostapenko became the first Latvian woman to reach the finals of the French Open after battling past Switzerland's Timea Bacsinszky in the final four.

To compare French Open finalist Jelena Ostapenko's preferred tennis style to ballroom dancing, just conjure up an image of the quickstep and speed it up by a factor of 10. I'm sure in future matches, it will hurt her, knowing how emotional she is; it always hurts players who wear their hearts on their sleeves.

"It meant a lot to me". I would be surprised if she came out and can hit winners all over the court like she has been. "Her life will never be the same after this - win or lose the title".

After top seed Angelique Kerber's first-round exit, Halep grasped the chance to replace the German to move atop WTA world rankings with a crucial head-to-head win against the second-seeded Karolina Pliskova in Thursday's semi-final.

But the more experienced Romanian was quick to respond once more, breaking to love as Ostapenko failed to consolidate the break for a second time.

Ostapenko was then unable to hold her serve, finishing the set with a tally of 14 winners and 23 unforced errors.

Ostapenko's unforced errors were starting to outweigh her winners but it was her turn to save three break points and get herself on the board in the next and the Chatrier crowd, enthralled by the entertainment before them, were delighted to see the Latvian get proceedings back on serve at 3-2.

Alexei Popyrin of Australia won the boys' title by defeating Nicola Kuhn of Spain 7-6 (5), 6-3. He is 3-0 in Grand Slam finals, beating Djokovic at the 2015 French Open and the 2016 U.S. Open.

On Sunday the Spaniard bids for a 10th crown at the French Open when he meets Stan Wawrinka, one of only two players other than the left-hander to have triumphed in Paris since Nadal burst onto the scene in 2005.

"She is smiling all the time", Medina Garrigues said.

Halep and Ostapenko have never played against each other before in their career and the final will be their first meeting.
