Google has hired an Apple hardware architect for SoC development

Nest uses a chip by Texas Instruments, for example, while current Pixel phones use Qualcomm.

Although you've sold more than 1 billion iPhones since 2007, Google's Pixel smartphone has been on the market eight months and has just apparently surpassed a million sales, according to an Ars Technica analysis of data on activations of the Pixel launch app. The Pixel and Pixel XL are rightfully called Google's answer to the Apple iPhone, coupling great software with great hardware. We may be looking at the beginning of an Android performance revolution in the works!

Gulati's title at Google is "Lead SoC Architect", meaning that he will likely oversee research and development for the systems on a chip (SoC) that the company intends to put in products coming down the line, be it a smartphone, tablet or Chromebook.

The Google Pixel.Hollis Johnson/Business InsiderIn a sign that it may consider building custom chips for its growing lineup of hardware devices, Google has poached an employee from Apple's chip-making division. Variety also notes that Google is now looking for other people to fill additional chip design positions, such as an open job listing for a "Mobile SoC CPU Architect".

As for when we might see Gulati's work inside of Google's phones, we aren't sure yet.

"The Cupertino-based computer maker filed a total of 15 chip-related patents that credit Gulati as one of the inventors".

The custom chip strategy could also make Google's Android partners nervous.
