Heinrich spars with Sessions over refusal to answer questions

Sessions both has been involved in the firing of Comey and recused himself an investigation into alleged Russian interference in the presidential election."If, as the president said, I was sacked because of the Russia investigation, why was the attorney general involved in that chain?" said Comey.

Sen. Martin Heinrich, a New Mexico Democrat who grew up in Missouri and got a degree from the University of Missouri, took Sessions to task for doubting the appropriateness of revealing private conversations with the president.

Sessions then recused himself in March from overseeing the FBI's Russian Federation probe and delegated that authority to his new deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein.

KRQE.com ❯❯ Save or Share this Page via. He asserted that "I am protecting the right of the president to assert if it he chooses and there may be other privileges that may apply". But Sessions said he had no recollection of that. He has acknowledged two meetings previous year with Russia's ambassador to the U.S., Sergei Kislyak.

When Democratic Sen. Al Franken of Minnesota asked Sessions if he was aware of any contacts between Trump campaign members and Russian officials, Sessions responded "I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I did not have communications with the Russians".

In his defense, Sessions could cite a memo written by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein that criticized Comey over the Hillary Clinton email investigation. Therefore, when he welcomed a Democratic congressman on to his show to discuss Attorney General Jeff Sessions' Senate testimony and the Russian Federation probe, fireworks were to be expected.

SESSIONS: Actually, I do not. But his former Democratic colleagues pressed him repeatedly on his contacts with Russian Federation and his role in the dismissal of Comey - who led the FBI's probe on Russian Federation until he was ousted.

Senator Angus King, an independent, questioned Sessions' legal basis for refusing to answer.

Vice-Chairman Senator Mark Warner, a Democrat, pressed Mr Sessions about his role in the sacking of Mr Comey.

"If any brief interaction occurred in passing with the Russian ambassador during that reception, I do not remember it", Sessions said. Sessions offered no clear reason why he wouldn't answer all questions, just gave some Southern buttered bullshit about the president being allowed to decide if he wants to invoke executive privilege. And he can expect questions about his involvement in Comey's May 9 firing, the circumstances surrounding his decision to recuse himself from the FBI's investigation, and whether any of his actions - such as interviewing candidates for the FBI director position or meeting with Trump about Comey - violated his recusal pledge.

"As such", he said, "I have no knowledge about this investigation, as it is ongoing today, beyond what has been publicly reported".

Comey also reportedly told lawmakers behind closed doors that one of those details included another unreported meeting between Sessions and the Russian ambassador. I'm following historic policies of Department of Justice. "I just finished Ignatius's book". Sessions said he "racked my brain" and had no meeting with any Russian in his capacity as a Trump campaign adviser.

"This is a secret innuendo being leaked out there about me, and I don't appreciate it", Sessions said, raising his voice.

When asked by Cotton whether the collusion of a sitting U.S. senator and a foreign ambassador would ever appear in one of these "fantastical situations", like a clandestine meeting at the Mayflower Hotel, Sessions used another literary reference to demonstrate what he sees as the ridiculousness of such a theory.

According to Comey, Trump said of Flynn: "He is a good guy".

Sessions said he did not recuse himself because he felt he was a subject of the investigation himself but rather because he felt he was required to by Justice Department rules.
