Hogg out of Lions tour to face All Blacks

Daly tried a long-range penalty as time ticked down, but not even the Wasps flyer's howitzer boot could deliver from nearly 60 metres.

Not numerous tourists will have boosted their Test chances, with coach Warren Gatland to name close to a full-strength side to face the Maori All Blacks on Saturday in Rotorua.

The Lions beat a provincial Otago side 30-19 the last time they toured New Zealand in 2005 and Highlanders assistant coach Scott McLeod is anticipating another big occasion at the compact yet noisy Forsyth Barr Stadium.

"We have to give the Highlanders a bit of credit because they brought the pressure to give away penalties but we've got to keep that to single figures".

Seymour opened the second half with a perfectly timed high-ball take that allowed him to race home for the Lions' second try.

"I'm sure for the neutral, for the Highlanders fans, it was a great game to watch but for us, there's a lot of learning to do". Sopoaga converted and the hosts had a 10-3 lead.

And the Highlanders got away with one of their own in the first half for Waiseke Naholo's score. "He was released earlier in the week for us and he put in a high-quality performance".

Jonathan Joseph levels the score with a try for the Lions.

It means the Lions have won two matches and lost two out of their four games so far.

But the Lions rallied and led 22-13 when captain Sam Warburton capped a strong comeback from injury with a try in 53rd minute, wading through tackles from a ruck 10 metres out. Sopoaga posted the penalty, with the Lions leading 15-13.

Winger Waisake Naholo, released from All Blacks duty to play the match, put his team 10-3 ahead, barrelling past lock Courtney Lawes from close range after his team spurned a number of penalty kick opportunities.

But back came the Highlanders, and with Sopoaga now off the field, it was Marty Banks who was doing the damage with an impressive tactical kicking game.

Liam Coltman is congratulated after scoring his try.

"We scored a couple of tries which was one of the work-ons for us this week", Warburton said.

Elliot Daly attempts to win it for the Lions.

"That's been the mindset from day one and it's certainly not going to change now".

Highlanders players celebrate their famous victory.
