House Committee Subpoenas Flynn, Cohen; Comey to Testify

President Donald Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen will be subpoenaed to testify in the Russian political meddling investigation by the House Intelligence committee, the panel announced Wednesday.

Cohen told CNN, if subpoenaed, he'd comply.

The subpoenas, the first from the House panel, seek their testimony, as well as documents from their businesses. "We will continue to pursue this investigation wherever the facts may lead", their statement said.

"If the reports are accurate, subpoenas related to the "unmasking" issue would have been sent by Chairman Nunes acting separately from the committee's Russian Federation investigation", the aide said in an email, referring to Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., who recused himself from the Russian Federation probe after the House Ethics Committee said it was investigating him for improperly revealing classified information.

Four of the seven subpoenas were related to the committee's investigation into Russian interference in the election, according to The Wall Street Journal. Trump attorney Michael Cohen had refused to voluntarily comply with an earlier informal request, but had said he'd comply with and formal subpoenas.

The other three subpoenas relate to questions around why Obama administration officials "unmasked" and distributed the names of Trump associates in classified intelligence reports. Flynn previously invoked his Fifth Amendment protection against self-incrimination.

Nunes subsequently admitted he had received the information in the White House complex, explaining it was the only safe place to examine the classified material. The unmasking subpoenas related to requests made by former national security advisor Susan Rice, former CIA Director John Brennan and former United Nations Ambassador Samantha Power, according to NBC.

The action to issue the unmasking subpoenas "would have been taken without the Minority's agreement".

The House panel pursuing its own investigation of the Trump campaign and possible Russian Federation ties has also sought information from Comey, asking the FBI to turn over documents related to his interactions with both the White House and the Justice Department.

The Trump-Russia investigations, both in relevant congressional committees and within the FBI, have picked up steam over the last few weeks, following Trump's decision to abruptly fire FBI Director James Comey.

Republicans have taken up the cause of unmasking of Trump officials as part of its attempt to deflect scrutiny into the Republican president's murky Russian Federation ties. Instead, Nunes said he'd been shown documents that he said suggested the Obama administration had acted improperly in "unmasking" the names of Trump associates monitored communicating with foreign officials. Devin Nunes (R-Tulare), had approved three subpoenas without their knowledge.

The committee's ranking Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, said Nunes approved the unmasking subpoenas without consulting the Democrats on the committee.

The Associated Press reported earlier this month that Comey planned to testify before the Senate committee after Memorial Day, but the approval from Mueller to do so could indicate that date is fast approaching.
