In Japan a giant Panda gave birth to a baby

Officials at the Ueno Zoological Gardens were able to confirm that giant panda Shin Shin gave birth to at least one cub, according to a statement.

A zoo in Japan has announced that one of its giant female pandas gave birth to a cub on Monday (12 June) - the first in five years.

The 11-year-old Shin Shin, which means "truth", was removed from public viewing in mid-May after she began showing signs of pregnancy, including loss of appetite and increased lethargy.

For the time being the zoo will monitor the cub around the clock, since the health of newborns is unstable in the days following birth.

Tokyo governor Yuriko Koike also expressed her delight, telling local media: "Romance is not just restricted to humans". A sign asking visitors to keep quiet was posted near the restricted area housing Shin Shin and the newborn cub. "We are really happy about it", Yutaka Fukuda, head of the zoo, said at the conference. "The cub is just born, so we would like to carefully watch over the progress of this tiny life".

Fairy and her mate Billy (Japanese name Ri Ri) have been firm favorites at the zoo since their arrival on loan from China in February 2011.

According to the zoo, about 50 percent of panda cubs do not survive infancy.

A Japanese expert said on Tuesday that the giant panda cub born recently at a zoo in central Tokyo is expected to bring a 26.7 billion yen (242 million US dollars) economic effect to the city, local media reported. It was greeted with widespread excitement. Shin Shin's previous cub died in 2012, less than a week after birth.

"Panda is a very hard animal to breed and there are still many things we don't know", Fukuda said. The new addition at the Ueno Zoo is said to be even more remarkable because it was born naturally.
