India rout Pakistan by 124 runs in ICC Champions Trophy

India captain Virat Kohli attends a press conference ahead of their ICC Champions Trophy Group B match against Pakistan at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

Skipper Virat Kohli delivered his verdict on India in the wake of their 124-run victory over Pakistan, in a rain-affected ICC Champions Trophy match at Edgbaston.

Due to rain interruptions, the target was revised with Pakistan needing 289 in 41 overs according to Duckworth-Lewis (D/L) method.

The left-handed batsman had scored just eight then with the Indian total 204-2. "Shikhar really batted well on the other end, so from that regard I think both of them started well", he added.

India very much looked like a side ready to defend their title in their innings, as Sharma, Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan found the boundary easily and had little trouble figuring out the Pakistan spinners.

"We'll have a good, hard chat tonight and when we leave the dressing room tonight it will all be done".

It was surprisingly easy for India. He brought his fifty by depositing spinner Shadab Khan over deep mid-wicket for a six. More importantly, he smashed Imad Wasim for three 6s of the first three balls of the penultimate over of the India innings.

Sharma was run out on a contentious call by the TV umpire, with the opener's bat over the line but not obviously grounded.

Azhar Ali's 50 was the only positive but Umesh's 3 wickets and Bhuvi's first break through ripped Pakistan apart before Pandya and Jadeja's 2 a-piece gave India a mammoth 124 run win. Jadeja gathered the ball at point and threw in one movement, directly hitting the stumps with the batsman far away.

Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed won the toss in what was the opening Group B match for both the arch-rivals in a tournament featuring the world's top eight one-day global teams.

"We had everything under control in the Indian innings up to 40 overs, but then we lost the plot in the last eight and credit must go to the Indian batsmen", Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed said.

A brilliant batting display by the top-order helped India post a challenging 319/3. Having hit two fours and a six, Pakistan were making a bold bid for the stiff asking rate (10 an over) by collecting 22 runs from two overs. "Yuvraj is in the team because he is a game changer", said Kohli after the match.

However, the type of performance displayed by the Indian in the batting and bowling department yesterday is a sign that they are all set to defend their title as defending champions. That chance was enough for him to grow into confidence, as he took on Pakistani bowlers in the depth overs.

A minute's silence was held before the match for the victims of the London Bridge attacks on Saturday night, amid heavy security at the West Midlands ground. It's not going to happen overnight.
