Islamic State says it killed two Chinese teachers kidnapped in Pakistan

Islamic State has killed two Chinese teachers it kidnapped in Pakistan's southwestern Baluchistan province last month, the militant group's Amaq news agency said on Thursday, in a blow to Islamabad's efforts to safeguard Chinese workers, Reuters reported.

A third Chinese national managed to evade the kidnappers while a passerby was shot in the foot when he tried to intervene.

There had been no claims of responsibility until Thursday, when the Syria-based terrorist group's global media outlet, the Amaq News Agency, announced the executions.

A Balochistan government spokesman said officials were in the process of confirming "whether the report is true".

Pakistani troops, including commandos, raided what was being described as headquarters of IS operatives in the province and killed 12 "hard-core" militants.

According to a press release, the operation killed 10-15 "hardcore terrorists" from the Lashkar-e Jhangvi group, who allegedly meant to help Isis establish a foothold in the area.

"The successful operation by security forces in Mastung denied establishment of any direct or indirect ISIS organised infrastructure in Balochistan (province of) Pakistan, also foiled terrorist incidents in Pakistan", an army statement said. Five soldiers were wounded, the army said. Balochistan has seen kidnappings of foreign nationals in recent years by armed Islamist or separatist groups, sometimes for a ransom. Some Pakistani sectarian groups have in recent months partnered with the IS group in spectacular attacks, including a shrine bombing that killed 90 devotees. It will ultimately link China's western Xinjiang region to Gwadar, giving Beijing the shortest trade access to the Middle East, Europe and Africa.
