Jeff Sessions testifies before Senate

Testifying at a Senate hearing, Sessions said it was a "detestable and appalling lie" to suggest that he participated in or was aware of any collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign. A Trump confidant, Chris Ruddy, told "PBS NewsHour" on Monday the president was weighing whether to fire Mueller.

Sessions won't describe his conversations with President Donald Trump about the firing of FBI Director James Comey.

Sessions also refused to answer whether any Justice Department officials had discussed possible presidential pardons of individuals being looked at in the Russian Federation investigations. "But this is the reason I recused myself".

"The suggestion that I participated in any collusion or that I was aware of any collusion with the Russian government to hurt this country, which I have served with honor for 35 years, or to undermine the integrity of our democratic process, is an appalling and detestable lie". Unable to shake anything out of the trees, Democrats vented much of their frustration at the Attorney General, saying that Sessions had no basis to refuse to answer questions from Senators.

Did Comey ask for help keeping distance from Trump?

Attorney General Jeff Sessions praised the President yesterday. The true stars to come out of this hearing were Sen. Sessions runs the Justice Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation falls under his purview.

Another hearing, another example of former FBI Director Comey not being honest.

"It is my judgment that it would be inappropriate for me to answer and reveal private conversations with the president when he has not had a full opportunity to review the questions and to make a decision on whether or not to approve such an answer", Sessions said. "I hope you can let this go".

Sessions has come under fire for not properly disclosing his meetings with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

"I don't think it compromises sources or methods or in any way harms America's position in the world, so we'll start with that", Wyden said.

Senator Kamala Harris cut straight to the point in her first question: "Just on the first page of your three pages of written testimony, you wrote 'nor I do recall, ' 'do not have recollection, ' 'do not remember it.' My question is, for any of your testimony today, did you refresh your memory with any written documents be they your calendar, written correspondence, e-mails, notes of any sort?" He is used to being on the other side.

But he denied an alleged third encounter with Kislyak, at an April 27, 2016 reception for Trump at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington.

Sessions denied the Mayflower meeting took place.

During his confirmation hearing, Sessions said he "did not have communications with the Russians" during the campaign.

Sessions bristled at Wyden, telling the OR senator that people are suggesting through innuendo that he has not been honest.

This was among the many times Sessions attempted to explain that he is protecting the President's right to choose to invoke executive privilege in not sharing the details of conversations. If he did have a conversation with the ambassador, it was "certainly nothing improper".

Sessions never heard Trump show any interest in Russian hacking before the inauguration.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions says he recused himself from the investigation into Trump campaign ties to Russian Federation because he was involved in the campaign.

If Trump were targeting Mueller, dismissing him would not be a simple matter.

AP reporters Josh Lederman and Ken Thomas in Washington, Eric Talmadge in Pyongyang, North Korea, Daniel Sewell in Cincinnati, and video journalist Sara Gillesby in NY contributed to this report.

In his dramatic appearance before former colleagues, Sessions contradicted a contention made by Comey at a hearing before the same panel last week.

Senators may also be curious about Sessions' current relationship with the President.
