Jeremy Corbyn Says New UK Election May Be Held by Early 2018

The talks were in line with DUP leader Arlene Foster's "commitment to explore how we might bring stability to the nation at this time of great challenge", her party said in a statement.

The party piled on votes and gained more than 20 new seats in Thursday's election. The eurosceptic wing of the party has always been a thorn in the side of Conservative prime ministers.

Former Treasury chief George Osborne - who was sacked by May a year ago - called her a "dead woman walking". The swell in Labour support in the cities plainly had some connection to Brexit.

But rumors swirled of plots to oust May.

"I felt passionate about voting to make sure Theresa May knew that young people like me would never support her or a Conservative government", said 23-year-old student Janet Walsh, who voted Labour. "Let's get on with the job". In fact, following her lead, the Conservatives immediately regained that majority by forming an alliance with their political allies, the Center-Right Democratic Unionist Party (DUP, representing Northern Ireland, which won 2 additional seats).

"The success of the Labour Party winning more seats than expected was because they tapped into anxiety over public spending cuts since 2010, anxiety over the state of National Health Service, and also concerns with youth voters over the amount of student debt and access to United Kingdom housing - two big issues".

Former Treasury chief George Osborne - who was sacked by May previous year - called May a "dead woman walking", and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said he was ready to contest another election at any time.

May's Conservative Party lost its parliamentary majority in the election.

Pressure has mounted on her to resign, and two of her top aides have stepped down, CBS News foreign correspondent Jonathan Vigliotti reports.

May is preparing to name the rest of her cabinet, after revealing Friday that her five most senior ministers would stay in their posts.

Graham Brady, who chairs the influential 1922 Committee of backbench Conservative lawmakers, said a "self-indulgent" party leadership campaign would only cause more uncertainty.

He acknowledged that the government would now be unable to get numerous measures promised in its election platform through Parliament.

May called the snap election to win a clear mandate for her Brexit plans, so she could slash immigration.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she assumed Britain still wanted to leave the European Union and that talks must start quickly. Other potential rivals such as Chancellor Philip Hammond remain within her government, and have so far mostly said little in public either before or after the election.

I asked my local party members early on Friday morning for their views.

She won't be striding confidently into talks with her European Union counterparts; she will be limping into them, looking shamefaced and defeated, a wounded animal who, many people will think, should be put out of her misery. "Discussions will continue next week to work on the details and to reach agreement on arrangements for the new parliament", it said. Several Conservative lawmakers, including Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson, raised concerns over the DUP's opposition to same-sex marriage.

"Theresa May is certainly the strongest leader that we have at the moment", David Jones, a junior Brexit minister, told the BBC.

But the wooing of the DUP risks upsetting the political balance in Northern Ireland by aligning London more closely with the pro-British side in the divided province, where a power-sharing government with Irish nationalists is now suspended.

May has managed to strike a deal to prop up her minority government.

She said Brexit talks would begin on June 19 as scheduled, the same day as the formal reopening of parliament.

To remove Mrs May from power, MPs could vote against the speech or pass a motion under the under the Fixed Term Parliaments Act 2011.

The last time this happened was in 1996, when John Major's minority government was toppled just months after its formation. Living in the Plymouth Sutton and Devonport constituency, he was among the voters who helped Labour candidate Luke Pollard take the seat from Conservative Oliver Colvile - increasing Labour's share of the vote by 16.7%.
