Kerber in historic loss, tearful Kvitova returns

World number one Angelique Kerber's nightmare season hit a new low on Sunday when she was dumped out of the French Open 6-2 6-2 by 40th-ranked Ekaterina Makarova.

Meanwhile, Czech Petra Kvitova advanced to French Open second round, winning her first match against American player Julia Boserups in her comeback match after a left-hand surgery. The 31st-seeded Vinci, most famous for ending Serena Williams' hopes of a calendar year Grand Slam by beating her in the semifinals at Flushing Meadows in 2015, lost to Rio Olympics gold medallist Monica Puig 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. "At the end of the match, it was really tough as I knew she wouldn't give it to me - I had to win it", said Makarova, a former semi-finalist at the Australian and US Opens. I think I played well after six months off.

Kvitova ended up wasting little time on court as she set up a second-round meeting with either Russian Evgeniya Rodina or American Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

An upset in name only at this point, the German has been banged up at times this year, and also expressed frustration in the press that she hasn't been moving well on clay lately. It also continued a miserable spell for the 29-year-old on clay. Kvitova played her first match since a year ago after slicing her hand open during a home invasion that had many questioning if she would ever be the same due to the damage. Its the latest in a string of early exits for Kerber, who reached her first three major finals in 2016.

The first result at the 2017 French Open was a tearful one.

Anisimova, who is 262nd in the rankings, became the first player born in 2001 to earn a spot in a Grand Slam main draw when she claimed the U.S. Tennis Association's wild card for the French Open.

Nearly five months after the incident, Kvitova made an impressive return to court as she looked sharp and eager in her 6-3, 6-2 in the opening round of the French Open.

Even Makarova was amazed by the significance of Kerber's loss.

Title favorites Garbine Muguruza, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will kick off their campaign at Roland Garros on Monday.

Looking up at her box, where members of her team wore matching t-shirts bearing the words "courage" and "belief", she added: "Thank you very much guys, I love you". I'm more than happy she's back. Williams, who is seeded 10th, saved two set points to win 6-4, 7-6 (3). "It's great to see her come back".
