Kieran Trippier makes debut in England's friendly against France

England manager Gareth Southgate admitted Tuesday's 3-2 friendly defeat to France in Paris provided further evidence of how far his side still have to go before they can be considered contenders at next year's World Cup.

After a show of solidarity in a pregame ceremony, England's opener come on the counter-attack in the ninth minute when Raheem Sterling laid the ball off for the overlapping Ryan Bertrand, who sent in a cross for Kane to tap in.

Les Bleus, however, did not have long to wait for a leveller as Barcelona centre-half Umtiti slotted a first worldwide goal beyond Tom Heaton after the Burnley stopper had parried a towering header from Arsenal hitman Olivier Giroud. Heaton stopped Dembele's brilliant shot, but failed to finish another save on right back Djibril Sidibe's shot on the rebound.

On 47 minutes, Real Madrid defender Varane hauled down Dele Alli in the box and was given a straight red card, as Kane stepped up to equalise.

While England remain comfortable leaders of their World Cup qualifying group, they have lost in Germany and France, and conceded two late goals to draw 2-2 with Spain in their high-profile friendlies under Southgate. We have got to find a way to win them, especially when they go down to ten men.

"You have got to control possession and stay calm but I thought we looked more anxious with 10 men", said Southgate.

Joe Hart has paid the price for his performance against Scotland and will not feature in tonight's friendly against France in Paris.

Alli's burst into the box ended under pressure from Varane, with referee Massa pointing to the spot and referring to the video assistants.

England have won only one of their past seven games against France, losing five.

It was no surprise when their victor came 12 minutes from time -and fittingly it was Mbappe who set up Dembele for a powerful, low finish.

The hosts should have been level shortly afterwards, though, when in-demand teenager Kylian Mbappe was released down the left flank and played the ball inside for Dembele, only for the Borussia Dortmund forward to fire wide when well placed. This points towards a French victory, but with rotation likely on both sides, it opens the door for the Three Lions to get a result. We're seeing that not only in terms of responsibility but the way the group are prepared to contribute when we're discussing games, when we're reviewing games. If we want to be courageous and play like that, then sometimes mistakes like that are going to happen'. "We just weren't good enough I don't think, we have to look at why".

"We just didn't manage that period of the game as well as we needed to, I thought we exhausted", said Southgate.

"But clearly even with video not every decision will be 100 (per cent) - you won't get every single decision right". It looked a clear penalty and therefore a sending off. "There is still an element of one person's judgment within that".
