May apologises to own MPs for election 'mess'

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who is touted as the favourite to replace May should she be forced out, called on colleagues to rally behind her.

May on Sunday appointed an effective "Deputy Prime Minister" after her election disaster as long-time friend Damian Green was made First Secretary of State and Minister for the Cabinet Office. Gove, who was dismissed when May became prime minister a year ago, will now serve as environment secretary.

The Labour leader's campaigning will continue, with plans to visit scores of Tory-held seats in a sign that the Opposition believes Mrs May's government will fall and another election could happen within months.

But rumors swirled of plots to oust May.

Most agreed there would be no leadership challenge.

"If they don't accept the phased negotiations then we will take a year to draw up a new set of negotiating guidelines for Barnier", one senior European Union diplomat said, adding that the European Union could not understand Britain's continued claim that it would be able to discuss trade and the divorce terms in parallel.

The Northern Ireland-based party is being courted by May to create an alliance to push through the Conservative Party's agenda after a disastrous snap election left May short of a majority in Parliament. Labour surpassed expectations by winning 262. The Evening Standard, edited by ex-Treasury chief George Osborne, reported that Cabinet ministers have initiated talks with Labour lawmakers to come up with a "softer", less hard-line divorce from the EU.

Many senior Conservatives say May should stay, for now, to provide stability.

The pound slid to its lowest level for almost two months after the vote, but the fall was much less severe than the one sparked by the Brexit vote in June 2016.

May will attend a meeting of the 1922 Committee of Conservative lawmakers on Monday, some of whom have called for her to be ousted.

He acknowledged that the government would now be unable to get numerous measures promised in its election platform through Parliament.

May is due to begin Brexit negotiations with Brussels on June 19 in a weaker position than before the June election.

Opponents of a sharp break include Ruth Davidson, the leader of the Scottish Conservatives who helped the party win 12 more seats in Scotland in contrast to losses elsewhere, have called for a closer relationship with the European Union after Brexit.

The Conservatives are now trying to secure the support of Northern Ireland's 10 Democratic Unionist Party lawmakers to assure passage of May's program.

The two sides are looking to form a "confidence and supply" arrangement.

DUP leader Arlene Foster, who travelled to Westminster for talks with the Tories on Tuesday, said she hoped a deal could be reached "sooner rather than later".

The alliance makes some modernizing Conservatives uneasy. As a Catholic, I should be flattered by the liberals' righteous fury: the Protestant DUP are the stuff of sectarian nightmares.

If the government are defeated in the Queen's speech, a vote of no confidence could be triggered.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4 over the weekend Jonathan Powell, former chief of staff to former Prime Minister Tony Blair (and chief British negotiator during the 1998 Good Friday Agreement) noted that allying with any party in the highly divided political landscape of Northern Ireland was one that past governments had avoided for a reason.

London's neutrality is key to the delicate balance of power in Northern Ireland, which was once plagued by violence over Britain's control of the province.

Mr. Powell pointed out that the British government's role as a mediator was no longer viable. By tradition, defeat on a Queen's Speech vote topples the government. Without the amendments, he said Labour would try to vote down the speech.
