May determined to form new government despite election shock

The loyalist and socially conservative party, the biggest in Northern Ireland, has drawn controversy for opposing same-sex marriage and any reform of the province's strict abortion laws. Ms May is expected to form a minority government with the help of the Democratic Unionist Party (of Northern Ireland), which is likely to offer informal support.

The shocking election result has caused great embarrassment to Mrs May, who called a snap election in April believing she could wipe out her opposition and gain greater control in the House of Commons.

Donald Tusk, president of the European Council, added: "We don't know when Brexit talks start". Meanwhile a minority or Conservative-led coalition government may have to compromise on the pace of fiscal consolidation or specific policy measures to maintain parliamentary support (the reversal of proposals to increase social contributions for the self-employed in March's budget highlighted a degree of inflexibility in fiscal policy making).

And 57 per cent of those who backed Jeremy Corbyn's party said they made their decision in the last month - indicating the poorly regarded Conservative campaign was a factor in their decision.

Confident of a sweeping victory, Mrs May had called the snap election to strengthen her hand in the European Union divorce talks.

Mark Dampier, head of investment research at Hargreaves Lansdown, told the Daily Telegraph: "Market reaction has generally been subdued so far because the Tory government will remain in power but a hard Brexit now looks less likely". He said it was impossible to predict whether she would still be prime minister at the end of the year. Speaking after being re-elected to his London seat, Corbyn said May should "go. and make way for a government that is truly representative of all the people of this country".

LONDON-The two top aides to British Prime Minister Theresa May resigned Saturday, shouldering some of the blame for an election that proved a disaster for the Conservative Party, a headache for Britain's exit from the European Union - and potentially a fatal blow to May's premiership.

Another senior minister tried to put a gloss on the dismal evening for the party. It is not known if the Tory Party in Parliament will be united on Ms May's leadership.

But despite jubilation among Mr Corbyn's supporters at bloodying Mrs May' s nose, Labour MP Chris Leslie said the party should not pretend it achieved a "famous victory". Several Conservative politicians also suggested she consider her position. She's taking us back to those times.

Less than a year after May was propelled into Downing Street following Britain's surprise referendum decision to leave the European Union, party insiders were placing bets on how long she could last.
