New poll finds Labour has six-point lead over Conservatives

New poll finds Labour has six-point lead over Conservatives

The revelation comes after critics said Prime Minister Theresa May does not have a mandate for her plan to remove Britain from the EU's single market, after she failed to win a parliamentary majority at last week's national election.

Mrs May also sought to reassure MPs that any confidence and supply deal with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) to prop up her minority administration would not affect power-sharing talks in Northern Ireland or LGBT rights.

Theresa May will meet the DUP Leader Arlene Foster later, whose support the PM will need in order to get her Queen's speech passed through Parliament.

Speaking at a meeting of the Conservative Party's 1922 committee, the Prime Minister said she would carry on in the job, saying: "I got us into this mess so I'm going to get us out of it".

"Theresa May can squat in Number 10 as long as she wants but the message is stark - she has no power, no influence and her game is up", said Mr Farron.

May has shown little public contrition for her electoral gamble that backfired spectactularly, but was forced to accept the resignations of her two top aides - reportedly a requirement by cabinet colleagues for allowing her to stay in office.

Anna Soubry, a Conservative member of Parliament, said she could not predict when May might go, but called the prime minister's position "untenable".

May's Conservatives unexpectedly lost their majority in Parliament in last Thursday's snap general election, causing political chaos ahead of the Brexit talks with the European Union which are set to start next week.

÷ Labour's policy on Brexit descended into chaos as two of Jeremy Corbyn's most senior frontbenchers contradicted the Labour leader.

"We can not continue like this", he said, predicting that even a loose alliance between the Conservatives and the Democratic Unionist Party in Northern Ireland can not endure.

May has a busy schedule on Tuesday, hosting a cabinet meeting and talks with the DUP leader before travelling to Paris to meet French President Emmanuel Macron.

"There can be changes in the offer of Brexit as we go forward", Davidson told reporters in London after meeting May.

"It may not be on the Monday because we also have got the Queen's Speech that week and I will have to speak in that, and so on".

Brexit Secretary David Davis revealed that discussions on the terms of the UK's exit package from the European Union might have to be postponed from the scheduled start date of 19 June to allow more time for the Government to prepare.

With Northern Ireland having been without a powersharing executive since March and without a first and deputy first minister since January, a new three-week process to salvage devolution has begun in Belfast.

"Our position remains that we want to get the best possible deal for the United Kingdom, we are confident of doing that but of course what you wouldn't wish to do is to agree to anything which would be harmful to the interests of the whole United Kingdom", he said.

"The reason for leaving the single market is because we want to take back control of our borders - they are not compatible".

Mrs May says they will have no veto on key policies.

The EU has said that sufficient progress must be made on these issues before trade deals can be discussed, though Britain had argued the talks should take place simultaneously.

Her foreign minister, Boris Johnson, described it on Twitter as a: "Stonking performance by the PM at 1922".

"The Taoiseach (prime minister) indicated his concern that nothing should happen to put the Good Friday Agreement at risk and the challenge that this agreement will bring", the Irish government said Sunday. It found a negative swing of 34 points in confidence from its last survey in May. First by Brexit and now through this election.
