New York Speeds Up Road Projects Ahead of Penn Station Work

The MTA will hold a media briefing on Monday at 11 a.m.; transit heads are expected to address summer schedules for the LIRR as Amtrak prepares to overhaul the infrastructure at the aging Penn Station following a series of minor derailments, breakdowns and other problems. Major tunnel and bridge projects will be complete by July 8, he said.

The plan, developed in conjunction with Gov. Andrew Cuomo's Penn Station Task Force, for the Amtrak repairs July 10 through at least September 1, adds more rush-hour LIRR trains and more cars to existing trains; cross-honors LIRR tickets for subway, bus and ferry service, and cuts in half overnight bridge and tunnel tolls for trucks, to alleviate road congestion.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is cutting 15 percent of morning peak trains and 19 percent of evening peak trains operating at Penn Station next month.

The agency is launching an "awareness campaign that includes letters to employers encouraging flexible work hours and locations", MTA Executive Director Ronnie Hakim said at a press conference Monday.

The MTA's Long Island Rail Road plans to add train cars and new bus and ferry routes during Amtrak's repairs. Three trains will be canceled between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m., Hakim said.

The authority will add 200 buses from eight park-and-ride lots in Long Island and a ferry between Glen Cove and East 34th Street in Manhattan.

New Jersey Transit's plan calls for most of the Midtown Direct trains on the Morris-Essex line to be diverted to Hoboken. That will prevent tourists from crowding the ferries, as they did with New York City's recently expanded ferry service.
