Nintendo Switch's paid online service has been pushed back

Nintendo has revealed more information about its upcoming Switch online gaming service.

Although Nintendo Switch will soon receive revamped retro games as part of its online service, the future of the Virtual Console, which carries Nintendo's classic games library, remains uncertain.

You'll be able to play compatible co-op and competitive games online by signing in with your Nintendo Account. A demo version of this will be available this summer.

"The SNES mini (or, to continue Nintendo's official branding, likely the Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System) is now scheduled to launch in time for Christmas this year. 3, Balloon Fight and Dr. Mario", Nintendo continued.

The company also said it intends to release a smartphone app that subscribers can use to connect with friends in order to chat and set up online play sessions. We have nothing further to announce at this time.

This has now changed to a system where members have access to a wide selection of games, as long as they maintain a membership. For now, playing with others online is free, but Nintendo plans to charge users for it soon.

That doesn't mean a Virtual Console will never come to Nintendo Switch.

With a Twitter announcement, Nintendo finally revealed what we could expect from their service. But, the spokesperson has clarified that the same is not the case and all classic games under this umbrella will be accessible to subscribers in their library.

The whole package will cost $20 per year, though players can also pick a one-month subscription for $4 or a three-month subscription for $8.

What do you think of Nintendo's online service?

Nintendo broke the news on its official website, but didn't explain why the launch date was being pushed back.
