No Lust, Avoid Meat, Keep Good Company: Ministry's Pregnancy Advice

No meat, no sex after conception, no bad company and keeping spiritual thoughts are some of the weird recommendations issued by the Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN), which comes under the Ayush Ministry, for pregnant women in order to have a healthy child.

Earlier it was reported that a pregnant woman should avoid intercourse, anger, meat and bad company to have a healthy baby, as per a booklet released by Minister of State for AYUSH, Shripad Naik, in the run up to International Day for Yoga on June 21.

Among other freaky suggestions, the booklet also advises woman to abstain from desire, anger, attachment, hatred and lust, keeping calm, to hang some good and handsome pictures in room to have a healthy baby. and being with "good people in stable and peaceful conditions only".

This is ministry of Ayush's prescription for pregnant women in India, where 26 million babies are born each year.

Medical experts, however, have contradicted what the booklet says. The recommendations from the ministry also advise the pregnant women to stay away from "desire and hatred". "While I'm not saying that those who are vegetarians should start consuming non-vegetarian protein, but those who usually consume it should continue to do so to fulfil their protein intake", Dr Kriplani added.

When contacted, CCRYN director Ishwara N Acharya said, "This is only an advisory and no one is forced to follow. While moderation is suggested, there is no need to change the dietary habits of a person during pregnancy", she said. "However, during the first trimester, we ask pregnant women to avoid drinking and smoking". "After that, unless it is medically indicated, there is no need to avoid it during normal pregnancy".
