'North and South Korea could host World Cup'

South Korea is deploying the USA anti-missile defence system in the Seongju region, about 250 km (155 miles) from the border with North Korea, to counter a growing missile threat from the North.

Seoul estimates that Pyongyang operates over 300 drones for military purposes and that, if the origin of the new device is confirmed, it would be a demonstration of North Korea's progress in espionage and use of military technology.

A suspected North Korean drone crashed near the demilitarized zone after capturing images of a USA missile defense system in South Korea, The Associated Press reported.

The three countries have been rotating summit hosting duties since 2008, although the gathering was not held in 2013 or 2014 after a chill in Japan-China relations. It swept over the site before making a U-turn a few kilometers south of the site, the official said.

"Two missile launchers and the fire control radar of the system which have already been deployed were also included in the pictures", he added.

Moon's administration has offered no timeline for when an environmental study into the negative effects of the deployment of six THAAD batteries in South Korea could be initiated, but affirmed that no further weapons installation would occur until "a full-blown environmental impact assessment is completed".

South Korea has repeatedly accused the North of flying suspected spy drones across the tense border.

Neither China nor South Korea has formally responded to the proposal.

Meanwhile, the drone's camera also snapped hundreds of photos of less sensitive material in South Korea, including residential areas and farmland, the official told AP.

Moon's administration in Seoul has sought to reopen negotiations with Pyongyang, and views the installation of the U.S. missile system aimed at the People's Democratic Republic of Korea (DPRK) as a marked hindrance to that possibility.

After a joint investigation with U.S. experts, Seoul said they were flown from North Korea and had been pre-programmed to fly over South Korean military installations.

Last month, South Korean authorities announced that an unidentified object flew across the border, sparking rumors that it might be a North Korean drone.
