North Korea fires volley of missiles

The UN Security Council last Friday unanimously adopted a US-drafted resolution imposing new targeted sanctions on a handful of North Korean officials and entities, a move Pyongyang said was "mean".

"North Korea fired multiple unidentified projectiles, assumed to be surface-to-ship missiles, this morning from the vicinity of Wonsan, Gangwon province", Seoul said.

The EU has steadily increased its sanctions against Kim Jong Un's North Korea, particularly in the last few months.

North Korea's weapons tests intend to build a nuclear and missile program that can resist what it sees as hostility from the U.S.and South Korea.

The USS Carl Vinson and the USS Ronald Reagan led the three-day exercises that ended on June 3, with a total of a dozen US ships participating along with two Japanese vessels, in a show of force directed at North Korea.

The missiles are the fourth new missile system North Korea has disclosed and tested this year, sending a defiant message that it will continue to pursue a weapons program that has rattled its neighbors and Washington.

"The decision to introduce THAAD was made to protect South Korea and the USA forces in South Korea from a growing threat from the North".

North Korea is believed to have figured out how to mount a miniaturized nuclear bomb on a ballistic missile, the re-entry vehicle is suspected to have survived the IRBM test, and the North's engine technology has improved.

DPRK stands for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the North's official name.

All five permanent members of the Security Council have said that no major new sanctions will be imposed as a result of the continuous testing of missiles; a Security Council diplomat said today that it would take a nuclear test to up the ante on sanctions, and even then, China might be reluctant to squeeze North Korea too hard, Falk adds.

North Korea is convinced it can successfully carry out an ICBM launch and it would be a blow to the policies of the United States against Pyongyang, the official newspaper said. Pyongyang often accuses Seoul of kidnapping its citizens and forcing them to defect to the South. Analysts say the most recent weapons test were both a way to make political demands clear to foreign leaders and a way to pressure Moon.

They also came less than 24 hours after Moon's administration said it had suspended the deployment of a us antimissile defense system - called Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD - that is meant to detect North Korean missiles and prevent them from hitting their targets.

The launch follows the move of Moon's government suspending the deployment of a controversial U.S. missile defense system which had strained relations with China and angered North Korea.

Last month, North Korea premiered a powerful new midrange missile that outside experts said flew higher than any other missile it has tested.

North Korea has conducted two nuclear tests and numerous tests of various missiles since the beginning of previous year, in defiance of United Nations sanctions.

The new tests came a day after South Korea suspended deployment of a controversial United States missile shield - an apparent concession to China, which is strongly opposed to the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system.
