NSA leak suspect's family: Trump will 'make an example' of her

Last weekend, the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested an employee of a corporation in Augusta, Georgia, that had a contract with the National Security Agency and charged her with espionage.

The charge, willful retention and transmission of national defense information, could bring victor up to 10 years in prison.

She is being charged by the federal government for "removing classified material from a government facility and mailing it to a news outlet".

The indictment was filed late Wednesday in the U.S. District Court in Augusta where victor, 25, is expected to appear for a detention hearing this afternoon.

This June 2017 photo released by the Lincoln County (Ga.) Sheriff's Office, shows Reality Winner.

Winner, a 25-year-old former Air Force linguist, yoga instructor, and former contractor at one of the National Security Agency's (NSA) eavesdropping center in Georgia, leaked a top-secret intelligence report about the Russians interfering with the American election, The New York Times reports. In numerous news stories, unnamed sources allege victor gave it to a reporter at The Intercept.

Winner's mother told NBC News on Tuesday that victor "would not jeopardize anybody's safety" and was "terrified" when she returned to her home in Augusta on Saturday to find federal agents waiting for her.

The NSA document in question provided technical details on what it said were Russian attempts to hack election officials in the United States and a voting-machine firm before the presidential election in November, two USA officials with knowledge of the case have confirmed to Reuters.

If convicted, victor faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $250,000, according to court documents.

The Intercept said the NSA report was dated May 5 - the same date court records cited for the documents victor is accused of leaking.

In the government's criminal complaint against victor, it says it was able to track her down as the leaker because The Intercept showed government officials a copy of the leaked document, which showed signs of having been folded.

Prosecutors warned U.S. Magistrate Judge Brian Epps that victor might have more stolen secrets.

Winner's attorney, Titus Thomas Nichols, declined to confirm whether she is accused of leaking the NSA report received by The Intercept. "Everybody in America knows what she looks like at this point".

Authorities haven't described the report or named the news outlet.

And there was a notation in one notebook, Solari said in which victor purportedly wrote, "I want to burn the White House down". Winner, 25, who had been living in Augusta, was arrested Saturday and is being held in the Lincoln County jail, about 40 miles northwest of Augusta, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. "But we do know she's very intelligent".

"I think they're going to try to make an example out of her because of the political climate right now", Billie Winner-Davis said. "The same is true of the FBI's claims about how it came to arrest victor", the statement said.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange also has weighed in, praising victor as a young woman "accused of courage in trying to help us know".
