NSW claim first blood in State of Origin opener

A back rower, he was named in the Australian under 15 merit side while also played at under 20 level with the Roosters and Knights.

Laurie Daley has rebuffed suggestions his NSW team are on the verge of establishing their own State of Origin dynasty against a teetering Queensland.

"We caught Queensland on an off night", said Daley, in his fifth year as NSW coach.

Dane Gagai took the ball deep into the Blues' half before he was tackled and from the next play scrum-half Cooper Cronk aimed a high kick towards the left corner.

Without Inglis, Matt Scott and Thurston the Queensland team looks distinctly, well... beatable, especially in the forwards where the NSW six should mash them.

Maroons rookie Dylan Napa wasn't impressed with his team's performance admitting the Blues wanted it more.

Minutes later another try followed.

The game started quick, with a try in the sixth minute to the Blues via Maloney (deftly converted), with no tries until Oates took a handsome kick from Cronk and scored a try for Queensland in the 37th minute, with Smith missing the kick. We played an under-17s semi-final at Langlands Park against North Queensland I think and he came off the bench and completely changed the game with his defence.

"He was enormous but he has to back it up (in game two)". One of his barging runs led to the first try.

60 min: The Hayne Plane lands at Suncorp to score off Graham.

Queensland have got to make a decision about the best way to go forward from here and whether they make changes purely created to win this series or whether they plan with an eye to the future as well.

"He's okay. Just concussion".

"I don't think he is at risk of doing something silly".

This was despite tremendous efforts from the likes of Cronk and Milford.

And at the same ground where Beetson inspired Queensland 37 years ago, Fifita was commanding, creative and bullish in NSW's 28-4 win.

Yet another Fifita bust set up Pearce's try on halftime in a body blow to Queensland.

"On my count, there were at least seven times Moloney clearly broke through with the line open".

In injury news, Queensland will monitor prop Nate Myles (elbow) and Milford while NSW will sweat on hooker Nathan Peats (corked thigh).

But they're no longer the latter - although the return of the injured Johnathan Thurston in match two in Sydney will undoubtedly help.

And State of Origin games are always close.

This columnist's personal realisation that NSW could dominate came in 1992, the start of their first three-year period of domination. "Guys like Josh and Chris have been playing particularly well. and they have forced their way into the side". I'm really excited to see Anthony out there.

"The Titans will put out an announcement tomorrow and I kind of want to give them the respect to put the announcement out, and we'll go from there. We didn't make the metres".

Check out the decidedly not-Maroon friendly wrap in the player below.

"We'll have a look, I'm not going to make any decisions tonight or anything", Walters said.

Walters steadfastly refused to buy into a slinging match, backing away from talk that Jarryd Hayne represents a defensive weakness for the Blues, even if Boyd will pester him from fullback on every possible occasion.

"That was before the team was announced, so I had to keep it quiet".
