Oregon Will Join Climate Change Coalition To Meet Paris Goals

Angela Merkel has blasted Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, describing the decision as "extremely regrettable" and promising that the rest of the world would press on with their own commitments to slow global warming. "If we can't, that's fine".

Trump on Thursday pulled out of Paris Climate Agreement, which lays down regulations to curb the emission of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.

Musk had faced criticism for joining Trump's panels on business and manufacturing, though he said at the time that "engaging on critical issues will on balance serve the greater good".

The pact was the first legally binding global deal to fight climate change.

While polls show that Americans in every state support the Paris Agreement, and voters - including about half of Republicans - support government action on climate change, the issue rarely motivates who Americans vote for, in part because the issue is a complicated one and the solutions to it so abstract. And she said she was "absolutely" confident they could meet the climate goals laid out in the accord.

Scientists have said a US withdrawal from the deal could speed up the effects of global climate change, leading to heat waves, floods, droughts, and more frequent violent storms.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday urged the world to work with Donald Trump on climate, insisting he did not "judge" the U.S. leader for quitting the landmark Paris accord.

During the campaign, Trump said the accord would cost the US economy trillions of dollars with no tangible benefit.

France said it would work with USA states and cities to keep up the fight against climate change. Specifically: Does the United States stay in the Paris Agreement, or quit?

Trump chose not to take those more dramatic pathways and instead opted to leave the Paris Agreement through the four-year-long withdrawal process. The US is the world's second biggest carbon emitter.

In a statement backed by all 28 EU states, the European Union and China were poised to commit to full implementation of the agreement, EU and Chinese officials said.

The UN chief said he was "deeply convinced" that U.S. "states, cities, the business community, the civil society will also remain engaged, will bet in the green economy".

Jeff Immelt, chief executive officer of US conglomerate General Electric, tweeted: "Climate change is real". A group of state governors, too, including leaders of NY and California, have formed a coalition to continue the work against climate change despite the federal position on it.
