Ostapenko beats Bacsinszky to reach final

Latvian Jelena Ostapenko's dream run at the French Open continued as she stunned former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki to reach the semifinals on Tuesday.

Ostapenko said: "We are good friends, because we played the doubles in China past year, and that's how I got to know her, she is a really nice person". And the 27-year-old deservedly took the first set as her opponent struggled to cope with the occasion.

Ostapenko, who won the girls' singles at Wimbledon in 2014, overcame two rain delays to beat former world No.1 Caroline Wozniacki, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at Roland Garros just before 8pm local time in Paris after a day when heavy showers whipped through the city.

Second-seeded Novak Djokovic and sixth-seeded Dominic Thiem were slated to meet in one quarterfinal at Roland Garros with fourth-seeded Rafael Nadal facing No. 20 Pablo Carreno Busta in an all-Spaniard battle.

Bacsinszky will turn 28, while the outrageously talented Ostapenko will turn 20 on a red-letter day for women's tennis.

It is windy on both courts and dust from the clay is getting in players' eyes.

Introduced to tennis at the age of 5 by her mother, Jelena Jakovleva, Ostapenko was a ballroom dancer for seven years before she opted for tennis. "Yeah, I'm going to enjoy it, but I will have plans after the tournament".

The winners were flying off of Ostapenko's racket on almost every point, Wozniacki with no answer to her opponent's sensational performance. "So I think if I keep it up, I think anything can happen". Bacsinszky didn't back down, fighting it off on an aggressive passage of play before bringing up match point with a perfectly placed victor down the line.

"She's a really nice person". Her affection for the tournament enticed her back from burnout in 2013 after she'd distanced herself from the game and gone back to school to study hotel management. Find us on Facebook too! But the duo put on a terrific performance to make the day memorable - not least setting a semi-final on their shared birthday.

"And that we are sharing the same birthday". "I'm no longer feisty".

The 19-year-old bounced back from some sloppy play in the first set and dealt with the rain delays far better than her more experienced opponent. I think the magic has been happening here for me here always, even the first time I came here as a little kid. You guys [journalists] have something to talk about.

- A hilarious Timea Bacsinszky pretends she's an umpire for a second as she waits for reporters to take their seats for her press conferences. The forecast calls for showers to return.

Cash posted a picture of the legends on Instagram challenging fans to name them.

Nine-time victor Nadal was due to face fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, while defending champion Djokovic of Serbia was scheduled to go up against Austria's Dominic Thiem.
