Pakistan confirms Chinese couple killed after IS claim

On Monday investigators informed Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan that the two Chinese nationals who were abducted from Quetta and brutally killed had actually been hired by an underworld Church owned by a Korean national to covertly preach Christianity among Pakistani nationals.

The interior ministry named the two as Lee Zing Yang, 24, and Meng Li Si, 26, and said their violation of visa rules had contributed to their abductions. It did not say what kind of preachers they were.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman said on Friday that China would continue to use various channels to gain and verify information about the reported killing of the two Chinese nationals kidnapped in Pakistan last month.

The minister was informed that the two were part of a group of Chinese citizens who obtained business visas from the Pakistani Embassy in Beijing and entered Pakistan.

Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was "working to confirm authenticity of the reports of killing of two Chinese nationals, kidnapped in Quetta".

He said a data bank of Chinese nationals, present in the country, should be prepared and maintained by National Database Registration Authority (NADRA) and should be shared with all security agencies of the country.

Hua said that after learning the two were missing, the Chinese government and diplomatic missions in Pakistan activated their emergency response mechanism and coordinated with the Pakistani side to "rescue them with our upmost efforts".

Taking note of laxity often shown by Pakistani missions overseas, he said the officials posted there should scrutinise visa applications properly and get necessary details before issuing visas to foreign nationals.

After the briefing, the Interior Minister ordered an initial review, followed by regulation and the streamlining of the visa process to avoid the misuse of business visas by foreign nationals.

The meeting also reviewed the progress in the registration ofINGOs under the new policy framework devised by the Ministry of Interior.

Several Chinese nationals have been visiting Pakistan, mainly as workers to participate in massive infrastructure projects connected to the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) - being built by Chinese firms and Chinese assistance. Foreigners should also inform local authorities about their movement and activities keeping in view the security requirements, if any, he added. He directed the secretary interior to investigate the matter and ensure that such misuse does not occur in future.

China is a longtime ally of Pakistan and is building roads and power plants under a multibillion-dollar project termed the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

It was informed that so far 66 worldwide NGOs have been formally registered.

The decision was taken during an important meeting chaired by the Interior Minister Nisar.

He directed that the process of granting formal registration to INGOs should be completed by the end of July.
