Penguins' Nick Bonino Played Through Broken Leg In Stanley Cup Final

The final game of the season will be viewed by many as a controversial one, as the Predators were robbed of a goal when a referee prematurely blew play dead just before Nashville's Colton Sissons scored what should have been the game's opening tally.

The call both denied Nashville a crucial 1-0 lead, and played an outcome in the result.

Some 10 minutes later, Sissons was in alone only to be stopped by goalie Matt Murray. He performed miracles and have stoped 27 shots, putting down his second consecutive shutout. The Penguins countered with wins in the next two games, the one Sunday secured with Patric Hornqvist's "dirty" goal with 1:35 remaining in the third period.

"They're two players of a very select few in the league that single-handedly have an ability to change the outcomes of games", said head coach Mike Sullivan. "We knew it was going to be hard but I think that's probably where the most joy comes out of, just knowing how hard it is now to go back-to-back and knowing that we overcame all those things". "That's always going to stand really close to my heart". Carl Hagelin added an empty-net goal. He averaged 1.89 points per game to Crosby's 1.31 in the regular season and 1.61 in the playoffs (Crosby, 1.13).

With what Crosby has been able to accomplish in his first 12 National Hockey League seasons, there is little doubt that No. 87 belongs in the first group of all-time great players, alongside Gretzky and Bobby Orr.

Darren Cossar, executive director of Hockey Nova Scotia, said Crosby has been a trailblazer for many other Nova Scotia hockey players who are aspiring to play in the NHL.

"We knew it was going to be tough all year, but we just tried to keep with it", said Sidney Crosby, who won his third championship, and second straight Conn Smythe Trophy as Stanley Cup MVP. "A lot of these guys played injured in the playoffs and showed a lot of character".

Midway through his career, Crosby has a world junior crown, three Stanley Cups, two Conn Smythes, two Olympic gold medals, a world championship and a pair of Hart Trophies. Every team has a chance to win.

The series had been a tough one for the Penguins, who are celebrating their 50th anniversary.

The Penguins won due to their depth, talent and resiliency, and those same factors will make them strong contenders in 2017-18.

Another bit of awesomeness was the fact Nashville got the better of a more skilled Pittsburgh team throughout much of the series, but that Pens team just had way too much depth and offensive grit to let it go to waste.

They did because they were gritty and resilient, and they took their lead from their captain. "Yeah, especially with the pressure on us and with how many guys we had playing hurt". But whatever happens now, he has cemented a special place in the game's history for himself that goes far beyond being one of the first goalies to paint a design on his mask. "I believe we have it in abundance in our dressing room".

"We've proven that we're a team that can compete now and win now", defenseman P.K. Subban said.

"I do not have to take responsibility for Pittsburgh signing (sic) Kessel", Karmanos said in July 2015.

"This was our goal at the beginning of the year - we knew that it hadn't been done in a long time". "We'll probably sit in the summertime and try to figure out a way to inspire this group again".
