Penguins take two-game lead over Predators in Stanley Cup Final

Nashville Predators goalie Pekka Rinne is under plenty of scrutiny after two games of the 2017 Stanley Cup Final. But the Penguins generated at least 35 shots in each of the last four games of their seven-game win over the Senators in the Eastern Conference final, including a combined 88 shots in the last two games. The Stanley Cup newbies were disappointed but not dismayed by their Game 1 loss, pointing to the way they carried play for long stretches as tangible proof they weren't just happy to be here. That wasn't the end of the Penguins' quick start in the period.

Game 3 is in Nashville on Saturday.

The Predators biggest advantage in the series was their vaunted defence and like in Game 1, it seemed to be paying dividends in Game 2.

Guentzel scored on a rebound 10 seconds into the third off the pad of Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne. "It's fine, I forgive him". "I believe all of them were odd, three-on-twos and two-on-ones makes it more hard".

Jake Guentzel broke a 1-1 tie by scoring his second goal of the game 10 seconds into the third to give the Penguins their first lead. The gap between Rinne's glove and trousers was about one puck's-width wide, but it goes to show it's never a bad idea to throw a put to the net.

Nashville's Pekka Rinne has been the best goalie in hockey all postseason, and he's not going to let something like that happen again. The Penguins offense was held in check for most of the game and had no answers for the Nashville defense until ten seconds into the third period. I think his confidence is there.

The Predators aren't of this series yet, but they sure need more from their aces, Subban, Filip Forsberg, Viktor Arvidsson and Roman Josi.

In Game 2, though, Laviolette had seen enough.

"We were leaving an odd-man numbered rush", said Laviolette. "They looked rattled after that". That gave Pittsburgh three goals in the first 3:28 of the third.

"The first one was the first faceoff, and Pittsburgh beat the pinch of the Nashville defenseman that created the opportunity". He also scored the game-winner with 3:17 left to win game one. "They probably accomplished what they wanted on the pinch but it got chipped by and it turned into a 2-on-1".

That feeling died a little bit on Wednesday after Justin Bieber chose to jump on the Penguins bandwagon. After a night of hilariously missed calls and increasingly chippy play, Subban and Malkin fought in the third. But it's pretty clear that his skill level and his ability to finish make him a good linemate for Crosby. But at 4-1, the game is over. You can see how good of a player he is, we can move him up and down the lineup. "But [Wednesay] night, they made more mistakes surrounding the pinch than they had previously in the playoffs and paid a high price for that". In terms of overall balance of play, it felt similar to Game 1 (plus a lot more Penguin shots), which was both optimistic and ominous for Nashville.

"It's insane", said Guentzel, who had tied it at 1-1 at 16:36 of the first period. "Our focus is the next game and that's it. ..." It has advanced with victories in the deciding games of each of the last two series. That would put them one ahead of the New York Rangers, despite the fact that the Rangers had a 41-year head start on them.

"The flip side of that, they've continued to be very, very good on their penalty kill".

"That's all I can say about Pittsburgh". They also understand they can't afford to have their offense go dormant for almost two periods. Mike Sullivan needs to get his players to generate shots, while Peter Laviolette, must work his goaltender back into his usual form. Only one rookie, Dino Ciccarelli in 1980-81, has produced more playoff goals with 14.
