Play starts in women's quarterfinals in Paris

Nadal progressed after fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta retired upon injury on Wednesday.

As Djokovic walked off the court after a 7-6 (5), 6-3, 6-0 defeat that hurtled toward its finish in one of the most dismaying and statistically anomalous decisive sets of his career, it was hard not to wonder when he might feel fresh again.

He then also held all four majors and became the first man to break the $100 million prize money barrier. "A year ago he was also playing really well and I had to play one of my best matches on clay to beat him", he said. This is a whole new situation I'm facing.

But the 23-year-old Austrian was by far the more composed in the tricky cool conditions on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

He allowed Djokovic just eight points in the third set - only the ninth 6-0 "bagel" the 12-time major victor has ever conceded. "And at the U.S. Open, I just was emotionally very flat and found myself in a situation that I hadn't faced before in (my) professional tennis career".

He wasted two set points in the opener. By the end of the match, he wound up with almost twice as many unforced errors, 35, as winners, 18. His backhand was particularly problematic.

When he was asked directly whether, in an ideal world, he would take a break from tennis, he said: "Trust me, I'm thinking about many things, especially in the last couple months".

Still, how unlikely was this result? Novak Djokovic effectively waved the white flag, bowing out of the French Open with a whimper on Wednesday. "To beat him for the first time in the quarters of the French Open is a dream".

Plus, Djokovic had appeared in a record six consecutive semifinals in Paris. "I have lived on that wave of excitement, I guess, 'til the U.S. Open or so".

But Agassi left midway through the tournament due to what Djokovic had described as prior personal arrangements and the 30-year old from Belgrade was blown away by Thiem after beating Spaniard Albert Ramos Vinolas in his mentor's absence.

He will take on nine-time champion Rafael Nadal for a chance at the 2017 French Open finals. "He deserved to win", Djokovic said in his post-match press conference, via The Guardian. "It's not getting easier on Friday".

The other men's quarterfinals scheduled for later Wednesday are 2016 runner-up Andy Murray vs.

Halep will play second-seeded Czech Karolina Pliskova in the semifinals, while in the other half of the draw Latvian teenager Jelena Ostapenko will take on Swiss Timea Bacsinszky. No. 7 Marin Cilic.

Last month, the 12-time Grand Slam champion parted with his entire coaching team. Carreno Busta downed fifth seed Milos Raonic on a seventh match point in the last-16.
