Pool of Mosquitoes Tests Positive for West Nile in Winnebago County

Franklin County Public Health officials say mosquitoes trapped in a pool near Hilliard have tested positive for the West Nile Virus.

"Oh mosquitoes, we are already quadrupling the numbers we had for Culex mosquitoes, which carry West Nile virus, which is still a very real threat to us here in Idaho", said Holt. The insect gets the virus by feeding on infected birds.

Dr. Faisal Khan said the emergence of West Nile in positive mosquito tests are a reminder of the importance of preventative measures. "We have estimated with the amount of flooding it has been close to 3.9 square miles, which given flow and agitation, that can add up to just one square mile of primitive mosquito raising habitat, which adds up to millions of mosquitoes every few days". Common symptoms include, but are not limited to: fever, headache, muscle aches, and nausea.

The elderly and people with compromised immune systems are at greater risk of developing a central nervous system illness that can be fatal.

"Even though serious West Nile cases in humans are rare, it is important to minimize exposure, " Dr. Khan said in a press release.

The majority of infections in humans have been reported from June through October.

The St. Louis County Department of Public Health says residents can take some steps to reduce the opportunity for mosquitoes to breed by eliminating all sources of standing water around a home.
