Portland stabbing victim urges support for harassed girls

Unease about white supremacist activity in Portland deepened after the fatal stabbings of two men who tried to shield young women from an anti-Muslim tirade.

Christian, 35, is now being held without bail at the Multnomah County jail on charges of aggravated murder, attempted murder, intimidation in the second degree and felon in possession of a restricted weapon.

He noted that there's a "white savior complex" present in society that has placed all the focus on the three men who stood up to Christian, rather than addressing the daily, lived experience of racism and Islamophobia that young people like Destinee and her friend face.

Christian, charged with murder, attempted murder, intimidation and being a felon in possession of a restricted weapon, carried on his hateful bluster during a court appearance Tuesday.

Jeremy Joseph Christian made his first court appearance Tuesday afternoon.

"These people need to be reminded that this is about them, that they are the real victims here", he said. Best, Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche, 23, and Micah Johnson, 21, intervened to defend the girls.

On Friday night, Christian reportedly harassed riders of the Portland train by shouting insults at two Muslim women and acting erratically.

Christian is due back in court on June 7, 2017.

His court-appointed attorney, Gregory Scholl, didn't immediately return a call.

A YouCaring page has been set up to collect money for the girls. We can not begin to understand this senseless act.

The document describes a chaotic scene.

The probable cause affidavit revealed more alleged details about the incident on the train.

One passenger tried to intervene and was not hurt, and the women moved away from the defendant.

Witnesses said three men were stabbed trying to calm Christian down as he verbally assaulted two teenage girls.

Officers tightened their grip on his arms as he added, "Death to the enemies of America".

Christian shouted "Do something!" and shoved Fletcher in the chest and appeared to pull a folded knife from his pocket, the affidavit said.

Trump's response to the attacks (criticized as "weak") was a statement sent from the official POTUS twitter account that read "The violent attacks in Portland on Friday are unacceptable". As a shoving match ensued, the documents say Christian stabbed first Fletcher, then Namkai-Meche.

In the wake of the attack, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler is asking the federal government to cancel a permit for what he called an "alt-right" rally scheduled for this Sunday, saying the event could make a hard situation worse. "They are intending to be provocative", Wheeler said Tuesday in a phone interview with The AP.

She also urged Trump to encourage all Americans to protect and watch out for one another and to condemn any acts of violence, which result directly from hate speech and hate groups.
