Qatar backs Kuwait mediation efforts over rift with Arab states

Kuwait's emir cautioned on Monday that the dispute could lead to "undesirable consequences", in comments carried by state news agency KUNA.

Qatar is home to the largest United States airbase in the Middle East, Al-Udeid, making it a key ally in the US-led coalition against IS in Iraq and Syria.

Three Iranian ports of Bushehr, Bandar Abbas, and Bandar Lengeh are now ready to be used for the dispatch of Iranian products to Qatar, Noorani went on to say.

He also praised Saudi Arabia for taking a "greater role in stability and security" in the Middle East. Several neighbours have been furious for years.

"We in Qatar are prepared to engage in dialogue positively, but in accordance with the worldwide norms and standards that govern any dialogue as per global law", Sheikh Mohammed said.

He was also dismissive of a terror blacklist published by the Gulf allies last week which named various Qataris and Qatar-based organisations. "We must concentrate on these families who are apart now", he said, referring to the Gulf Cooperation Council, founded in 1981, which includes Qatar and its neighbours. "We're not going to specify the nature of those conversations".

Qatar's Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, said earlier on Monday that Qatar and the United States were in touch with Kuwait, the main mediator between the members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), "to calm the situation".

Another implication is that Qatar has promoted 2022 as a regional World Cup, to bring together fans across the Middle East.

In an interview with CNBC television, one of the first public appearances by a Qatari economic policy maker since the crisis erupted, Finance Minister Ali Sherif al-Emadi sounded confident.

Iran's flag carrier is flying vegetables to Qatar after Arab nations cut land, sea and air routes to the energy-rich Gulf nation. On Monday, the currency came off last week's lows in the spot QAR= and offshore forwards markets QAR1Y=W.

Sheikh Mohammed said the allegations on the Muslim Brotherhood were "false" and that it did not understand why it needed to cut ties with Hamas, since it was a resistance movement and not a terrorist group.

Tuvey said the main threat to the economy was that Qatari banks could find it much harder to obtain wholesale funding from other banks to sustain growth in their loan portfolios. Last week, a Qatari woman was forced to hand her two-year-old son to her Saudi husband across the border after Saudi authorities said she could not enter, Sultan Qahtani, a Qatari police major, told Reuters in his office.
