Russian Federation collusion claim 'detestable lie'

Sessions recused himself in March following reports that he had twice met with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the 2016 US presidential campaign. He also said he hasn't spoken to special counsel Robert Mueller about the Russian investigation.

"Any suggestion I participated in, or was aware of, collusion with the Russians is an appalling and detestable lie".

"Further, I have no knowledge of any such conversations by anyone connected to the Trump campaign", Mr. Sessions told the panel, his voice rising with pique.

Senator Kamala Harris once again found herself interrupted by her male colleagues during Attorney General Jeff Sessions' Congressional testimony Tuesday.

He added: "Sen. Franken asked me a rambling question, after some six hours of testimony, that included dramatic, new allegations that the United States intelligence community has advised President-elect (Donald) Trump that there was continuing exchange of information during the campaign between Trump's surrogates and intermediaries for the Russian government".

Democrats took a harsher tone, insisting Sessions had taken liberties in interpreting rules that enabled him to evade their questions.

Senators are also expected to ask Sessions why, after recusing himself from the Russian Federation inquiry, he signed a letter last month recommending that President Trump fire Comey.

Sessions recused himself from the Russia probe in March after it was revealed he twice met with the Russian ambassador during the campaign but failed to say so when pressed by lawmakers at his confirmation hearing. Republican U.S. Susan Collins questioned whether Sessions violated his recusal from the Russian Federation probe when he recommended Comey's dismissal. He should have raised his concerns to Dana Boente, however, Sessions said.

"We are talking about an attack on our democratic institutions and stonewalling of any kind is unacceptable ... there is no legal basis for this stonewalling", Oregon Senator Ron Wyden said.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions faced questioning from his former Senate colleagues Tuesday afternoon as he testified before the same committee that last week hosted James Comey, the fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director. "President, I can't talk about that, '" Sessions testified.

Sessions said he trusted Comey to do his job well, and that's why he didn't get involved when Comey expressed concern about the president interfering in the FBI investigation. Sessions said he never spoke to Comey about his job performance before he was sacked. But his very public handling of the Clinton email investigation was chief among them.

"In any of your conversations with the president about the firing of James Comey did the question of the Russian Federation investigation ever come up?" They don't decide prosecution policies.
