Ryan says Trump should let Mueller do his job

Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller as special counsel overseeing the probe into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election, deflected the question in a House committee hearing Tuesday afternoon.

But both appearances, however, are being overshadowed by Sessions' public appearance at a Senate intelligence committee hearing.

Confronted with Mueller's first moves, the White House responded with the sheathed blade of an implied threat, amounting to Mueller can hire who he wants; he could be fired at any time.

In his special counsel role, Mueller has assumed all the powers of a federal prosecutor - including subpoena authority. If there were good cause, I would consider it. "I have confidence in Bob Mueller".

Congress' decision not to renew the law followed the independent counsel investigations of then-President Bill Clinton's conduct by the widely-criticized former Solicitor General Kenneth Starr and several other special prosecutors, which collectively cost almost $80 million.

"Senator, I'm not going to follow any order unless I believe those are lawful and appropriate orders", Rosenstein said.

On the other hand, it would cause a political storm, said the writer.

"I think we should let Bob Mueller do his work and get to the bottom of it, and get to the bottom of it quickly so that he can be vindicated..."

Attorney General Jeff Sessions heatedly denied on Tuesday that he had any undisclosed meeting with the Russian ambassador or conversations with Russian officials about the US elections. Newt Gingrich, who is close to Trump, tweeted: "Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair. And the next day, he's now maybe using some of that information in his investigation". Let's also recall that despite the media's tunnel vision on Trump, the wider Russian Federation investigation is examining a much wider array of issues and questions pertaining to our geopolitical adversary's malicious meddling efforts in the 2016 election.

"I think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel", Ruddy said in an interview with Judy Woodruff of "PBS NewsHour".

Rosenstein said "I think the answer is no" but said it would depend on the circumstances.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Paul Ryan urged the White House to let Mueller's investigation play out.

Just weeks ago, Gingrich had heaped praise on Mueller, hailing him as a "superb choice" for special counsel whose reputation was "impeccable for honesty and integrity".

"At the same time, after Trump's firing of FBI Director James B. Comey, many things once thought beyond the realm of possibility look less so now", Katyal said.

Trump could order Mueller's dismissal. "One of them worked for the Clinton Foundation", Gingrich said on CBS' "This Morning." The person spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations.

Essentially, Rosenstein is saying he would not approach a presidential order to fire Mueller in the same way that he approached the president's request to come up with a pretext for firing FBI Director James Comey.

Asked about Trump's own contention that the president fired Comey with the Russian Federation probe in mind, and regardless of any recommendation from anyone else, Sessions said: "I guess I'll just have to let his words speak for themselves". Still, he added, "I can't imagine that that issue is going to arise".

The effort to muddy the waters surrounding the investigation is coming amid growing White House concern that the probe could detract from the president's agenda for months or years to come.

The public testimony Tuesday before the Senate Intelligence committee should yield Sessions' most extensive comments to date on questions that have dogged his tenure as attorney general and that led him three months ago to recuse himself from the Russian Federation probe.

Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller, declined to comment on Ruddy's remarks.
