Samus Returns for 3DS — Nintendo announces Metroid

During Nintendo's E3 Treehouse event, Nintendo of America's Reggie Fils-Aime unveiled Metroid: Samus Returns for the Nintendo 3DS. The last game in the series was Metroid Prime 3, released in 2007. But the name "Metroid Prime" suggests it's the first game to return to the Metroid games of the GameCube era that everyone loved.

Otherwise, Samus Returns appears to be a pretty classic 2D Metroid experience that incorporates a few 3D visual elements.

Metroid Prime 4 launches in 2018 exclusively for Nintendo Switch.

People are still riding high after Nintendo confirmed Metroid Prime 4 being in development but we have a new reason to hold on to the 3DS.

Stay tuned to IGN for more Nintendo news, and find all of the big announcements from the show in IGN's E3 hub.

Beyond that, Nintendo didn't reveal additional details about development, but did confirm that the game is still a first-person adventure and will be released "beyond 2017". It is being developed by MecurySteam, the studio behind the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow games.

On a final note, the reveal of "Metroid: Samus Returns" might go a ways towards explaining why Nintendo shut down "AM2R," a fan project with a similar goal of remaking "Metroid II", past year.

The game was poorly received by players and sparked a notable backlash including petitions and campaign to down-vote the game's YouTube reveal trailer.
