Say hello to BMW's new 6 Series crossover

That successor is the 6-Series Gran Turismo which was revealed by BMW on Tuesday. While the outgoing 5-Series GT did so at the expensive of styling, the 6-Series GT appears to be slightly more toned-down.

That's up on the $64,195 starting price of a comparable 2017 5-Series GT, but the 6-Series GT is a sleeker, sexier auto. The auto pictured is a 630d xDrive, confirming that a 3.0-litre twin-turbodiesel six-cylinder will be available, alongside all-wheel-drive.

The adoption of the 6 Series name for a replacement for the 5 GT is in line with the German auto maker's efforts to place greater emphasis on luxury at the upper end of its line-up.

The 6-Series GT is also BMW's first model equipped as standard with a variety of electronic driver aids grouped under the Active Driving Assistant heading. Interestingly, BMW has dropped the 6 Series GT by more than 6cm at the rear, and this last change arguably addresses the swollen rump some felt was a prominent feature of the 5 Series GT. In addition, BMW optimised the weight of the GT by upping the aluminium and high-strength steel content in the body and chassis.

Although it's badged as a 6-Series, the 6-Series GT is unrelated to the 6-Series Convertible and 6-Series Gran Coupe that's also on offer for the 2018 model year.

The new 6 Series GT is designed around similar principles, providing not just "comfort and elegance, but practicality too". To that end, its 610-litre boot is up 110-litres on the 5 Series GT, while the 1,800 litres of space available when the three rear seats are folded represents an increase of around 5%.

In the United Kingdom, buyers will get the choice between the standard SE model and a more aggressively styled M Sport package with beefed up bumpers, more prominent sills and larger wheels and tyres.

Among the petrol units in the launch line-up is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo developing 258bhp and 295lb ft in the rear-wheel-drive 630i Gran Turismo. It is claimed to hit 62mph from a standstill in 6.3sec and has a limited 155mph top speed. This improves grip and performance, but increases fuel consumption and Carbon dioxide emissions by around 10%. For 2018, BMW is adding this bulbous hatchback version of the 5-Series sedan to the lineup, calling it the 6-Series Gran Turismo.

The vehicle seen here is a 630d xDrive model, with a 195kW/620Nm 3.0-litre turbo-diesel straight-six. In standard rear-wheel drive guise, it possesses a 0-62mph time of 6.1sec and limited 155mph top speed together with official consumption of 57.7mpg and Carbon dioxide emissions of 129g/km.
