Secret Service: We don't have any Trump White House tapes

The committee said it wants those materials by June 23.

One of the things Comey told the Senate committee was that he believes he was sacked last month in an effort to "relieve" pressure on Trump from the Justice Department investigation. "I mean, I will tell you, I didn't say that", Trump responded.

"Now is the time for a lot of hard spade work". Legal experts and pundits say that, along with the firing of Comey itself, could amount to obstruction of justice.

He said he would be happy to speak to special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating allegations that Russian Federation interfered with the election and colluded with Trump's campaign. As part of that process, Mueller will likely talk to Trump and Comey, but the inquiry will not end there.

In his public testimony, Comey did not disclose any links between Trump advisers and alleged Russian attempts to meddle in the 2016 US presidential election, an issue that has distracted from White House policy goals such as overhauling the USA healthcare system and cutting taxes.

The leaders of the Senate judiciary's probe sent Richman the request Thursday and asked he provide it by Friday.

Jill Wine-Banks, a former Watergate prosecutor, questioned why Republican-led congressional committees have not issued subpoenas for the tapes.

But Trump refrained from confirming that he had records of conversations with Comey as he previously implied.

"[Mr Trump] should voluntarily turn them over", she added.

In his testimony and prepared seven-page statement for Thursday's hearing, Comey said that he'd taken the unusual step of making a written record of his conversations because he thought the president "might lie" about them later.

Comey admitted he leaked the information as part of the FBI's probe into Russia's involvement in US elections and the connections of the president's former national security adviser Michael Flynn with Russian officials.

On Friday, however, the President flatly denied making those remarks to Comey or pressuring him to drop the investigation into Flynn, implicitly or otherwise.

US President Donald Trump today accused James Comey of cowardice by leaking accounts of his meetings with the president, days after the ex-FBI director testified that Trump sought to derail the Russian probe.

Celebrated criminal defense lawyer Alan Dershowitz has argued in a lengthy Twitter commentary that Trump was at worst guilty of "political sins"; he said there is "no plausible case" for obstruction charges. Trump also denied asking Comey for a pledge of loyalty.

"And some of the things that he said just weren't true", Mr Trump said, lashing out at Mr Comey and branding him a "leaker" for indirectly providing to reporters the contents of memos summarising their private conversations before he was sacked.

"One hundred percent", Trump said in the Rose Garden yesterday afternoon when asked if he'd make the same claims in sworn testimony to Special Counsel Robert Mueller if asked.

Mr Trump has since told reporters that he did not say this to Mr Comey, causing observers to question which man they should believe.

"Oh, you're going to be very disappointed when you hear the answer, don't worry", said Trump.
