Senate Judiciary Committee seeks meeting with Robert Mueller

A Republican member of the Senate Intelligence committee says Congress should obtain any tapes that President Donald Trump might have of his conversations with the man he fired as Federal Bureau of Investigation director - James Comey.

(The Hill) A key Senate panel is considering whether to step up its battle to meet with former FBI Director James Comey, who gave dramatic testimony this week to a competing committee.

"I didn't do it myself for a variety of reasons, but asked him to, because I thought that it might prompt the appointment of a Special Counsel".

Trump's legal team will file a complaint early next week with the Justice Department's inspector general.

Mr Comey did not end an FBI investigation into Mr Flynn, and also refused to pledge his loyalty to the President.

Grassley has faced calls from the ranking Democrat on the committee, Dianne Feinstein of California, to begin an investigation into whether Trump improperly interfered with the FBI's investigation into the President's former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

The Maine Republican says Comey was wrong to leak his private conversation with the president. Trump tweeted in mid-May.

The memos laid out details of an Oval Office meeting. Accordingly, we ask that you provide the Committee copies of all memoranda you received from Mr. Comey by no later than June 9, 2017.

"The real issue is whether the president has a reasonable expectation of confidentiality when he fires somebody and then lies about the circumstances in which he did that, and that strikes me as a matter in which to ask that question is also to answer it", Benjamin Wittes, editor in chief of the Lawfare blog and a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, told Yahoo News.

Trump's attorney Mark Kasowitz said Comey made "unauthorized disclosures" of privileged communications and said he would leave it to the "appropriate authorities" to determine whether Comey should be investigated. Comey told senators he believed Trump fired him because of the Russian Federation investigation.

"Even in the context of lawyer-client privilege, if a client attacks the lawyer publicly, the lawyer can self-defend", Kohn said.

Comey also shielded himself from any administrative repercussions by making the disclosures orally, Kohn and others said.

This letter came a day after former FBI Director James Comey testified before the intelligence committee about his conversations with Trump. "So if the claim is that he's admitted to leaking classified information, that's simply factually false".

"That's exactly what it looks like to me", said Matt Whitaker, a former US attorney and executive director of the ethics watchdog the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust, asked if the reported Kasowitz complaint was a public relations move.

"I'll tell you about that sometime in the very near future", Trump said.

While Comey may be in the clear legally, that does not mean that he acted "appropriately", critics say.

A senior Russian lawmaker has dismissed the testimony of former FBI Director James Comey as insignificant.

In her words - "More sleep might be a solution for him".

"I think the intelligence committee is doing good work and should continue", Feinstein said.

There is some dispute about whether the content of the memos should be considered property of the bureau or his personal recollections.

Comey testified before that committee on Thursday, and Sen. He said it was an effort to further the investigation.
