Sessions says he will appear before Senate Intelligence Committee

Attorney General Jeff Sessions was scheduled to testify before the House and Senate Appropriations Committees Tuesday, but announced today he would instead testify before the House Intelligence Committee.

In letters Saturday to Senator Richard Shelby, Republican of Alabama, and Representative John Culberson, Republican of Texas, Sessions said he'd concluded that regardless of which committees he appeared before, the questions would inevitably focus on the Russian probe.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is for sharp questioning by senators on the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday.

When the two men were alone, the ex-FBI director said, Trump urged Comey to stop the investigation into fired national security advisor Michael Flynn.

Comey's testimony raised questions about Sessions' engagements with Russian Federation and his involvement in Comey's firing despite Sessions' recusal from the Russian Federation investigation, which Comey was leading. The DOJ fired back with a response saying Sessions recused himself only because he was involved in President Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.

Fellow Republicans pressed President Donald Trump on Sunday to come clean about whether he has tapes of private conversations with former FBI Director James Comey and provide them to Congress if he does - or possibly face a subpoena, as a Senate investigation into collusion with Russian Federation or obstruction of justice extended to a Trump Cabinet member.

The move is a prominent switch from his previous plans to testify publicly on the Justice Department's budget and puts him more directly in the firing line over questions about his contacts with the Russian ambassador to the United States and a federal investigation into Russian attempts to influence the 2016 election. The intelligence panel "is the most appropriate forum for such matters, as it has been conducting an investigation and has access to relevant, classified information", he added. During his confirmation hearing, Sessions testified under oath that he had no meetings with Russian officials during the campaign.

At the conclusion of a February 14 meeting in the White House, Comey testified, Trump urged everyone else but Comey to leave the Oval Office, including Sessions.

"The attorney -general was not silent; he responded to this comment by saying that the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Justice needed to be careful about following appropriate policies regarding contacts with the White House", the statement said.

Comey said Trump told Sessions and other administration officials to leave the room before Trump asked him in February to drop a probe into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn's contacts with Russian Federation.

Sessions did not say in the letter whether his appearance would be in public or behind closed doors.

Sessions said he would send Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to the appropriations subcommittees in his stead to discuss budget matters.
