'Significant' number of holidaymakers still without luggage after BA IT failure

"I know this has been a disgusting time for customers", said British Airways Chief Executive Alex Cruz in the latest statement on the airline's website.

Airline CEO Alex Cruz apologized to customers on social media on Saturday evening, mentioning that a power outage was a likely reason; yet travellers continued to be disgruntled, stating that the airline was not keeping them informed.

In normal circumstances an airline that cancels a flight must be given the opportunity to re-book passengers on another departure.

The airline said it has a freephone number - 0800 727 800 - for people affected by the IT failure.

Stacy Irish, who posted the footage on Twitter (Frankfurt: A1W6XZ - news) on 28 May, said: "I was told it has nothing to with BA if customers can't afford it". This latest crisis spells further trouble for the airline, since it is not the first time that such an outage has occurred in the past year.

A spokeswoman added: "As a global airline that flies to and from more than 170 airports worldwide, we have call centres placed strategically around the world in the UK, Europe and Asia.

In 2016, BA made hundreds of dedicated and loyal IT staff redundant and outsourced the work to India", said Mick Rix, national officer for aviation at the union.

Meanwhile, BA's end of year report highlighted an erosion of brand reputation as one of the factors with the greatest potential to severely damage the airlines profitability in a fiercely competitive market. This affected at least 15 departures for destinations including Amsterdam, Belfast, Copenhagen, Dublin, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Milan and Stockholm, but it's expected that a full schedule for both short- and long-haul flights will operate today.

Cruz also said he is "profusely apologetic" over the incident and said he will not resign.

Other passengers whose flights were disrupted over the weekend will have the option to re-book their flights for any time over the next six months.

British Airways now faces a potentially hefty bill to compensate passengers whose flights were either delayed or cancelled that some analysts have pegged at more than £100 million ($128 million).

"We have been giving letters to customers telling them how to claim under European Union compensation rules and we will fully honour our obligations".

In spite of the unforeseen effect of the happening lasting for three days, Mr Cruz said the hardware problem was restored "after a few hours", and vowed the company would "make sure that it doesn't happen again". "Many of you have been stuck in long queues while you've waited for information".
