Simona Halep brushes off injury worries ahead of French Open final

Should she win on Saturday against third seed Simona Halep, she would become only the second unseeded player to win the women's title at the French Open after Britain's Margaret Scriven in 1933.

Switzerland's Timea Bacsinszky and Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko advanced to the women's singles semi-finals in the French Open tennis championships.

NAN reports that Mimi Jausovec was the last unseeded player to reach the French Open final in 1983, losing to Chris Evert.

Ostapenko and Halep battled tightly in the third and final set, and while Ostapenko committed over 50 unenforced errors throughout the game, her forehand and strength on the court ultimately overpowered Halep.

"It's nice to be back in the finals, I hope this time I can play better". For many years, big things have happened for me at Roland Garros.

The ankle is not flawless but Halep negotiated the early rounds comfortably and has survived scraps with Svitolina, who she trailed by a set and 5-1, and Karolina Pliskova in the last two matches. It was a first Slam title for both the 37-year-old Bopanna and his 25-year-old partner from Ontario.

Halep finished a total of 14 winners against her 14 unforced errors, while Pliskova's 55 unforced errors cancelled out her 45 winners.

"I'm a different player, my game is stronger, I think more about the game, I play smarter", she explained.

Nowhere was her tenacity and ability to soak up punishment more apparent than in the quarter-finals when she trailed Elina Svitolina by a set and 5-1 but somehow found a way to win.

The now retired Ivanovic was present at Roland Garros on Thursday and was honored by the French tennis federation in a ceremony after the first semifinal.

The 31-year-old Nadal, who retired last year before his third-round match with a wrist injury, is the only man with nine trophies from one Grand Slam tournament. But, this time, it was Ostapenko who won three games in a row to seal the set - not Bacsinszky.

Pliskova, also in quest for the world No. 1 place, bounced back in a 6-3 win in the second set.

A telling statistic: Of the 33 points Halep won in the first set, only one came via a victor off her racket.

"I was scared, because they told me that it (the ligament) is broken", she said.

Halep won the second set with a net-cord victor but on Saturday Ostapenko earned the key break of the third at 3-3 with her own slice of luck.

The previous time an unseeded player won the women's title at the French Open.

The 5-foot-6 (1.68-meter) Halep is a ball-chasing, defensive dynamo unafraid of lengthy exchanges who gets to almost everything off an opponent's racket and is careful when she swings.

"I'm really happy and proud".

She began what would become an enthralling 2-hour encounter by breaking No. 3-seeded Simona Halep at love with a series of grip-it-and-rip-it shots.

Jelena Ostapenko, world number 47, is the first Latvian to reach a Slam final.

But whatever the outcome on Saturday, Latvia, which has a population of just under two million, will have two players in the top 20 for the first time.

She added: "It's a tough day today because I couldn't win but let's work, let's keep working, let's believe".
