Siri enters the living room as Apple debuts HomePod speaker

APPLE HAS announced Homepod, a new voice-controlled speaker.

Created to work with an Apple Music subscription and featuring built-in Siri technology, the nearly 7-inch HomePod will come in white and Space Gray. Along with its new line of computer and laptops, the tech giant has also launched a screen-free computer, powered by Siri, which doubles down as a top-notch home audio device.

Users say "Hi Siri" followed by their command to trigger Apple's intelligent personal assistant to change the light setting, pause the TV or close the blinds. Also, it has also introduced a new music-based smart speaker called HomePod built to deliver topnotch audio experience.

Analysts said the smart home speaker market is ripe for Apple.

Chief executive Tim Cook said, ' Just like portable music, we would like to reinvent home music'.

There was a veritable feast of announcements at Apple's developer conference and we've rounded up the best.

In another point of differentiation from its competition, the Apple HomePod seems to be only set up for Apple Music, according to The Verge. The smart assistant speaker has immediately been compared to others in the market like Amazon Echo, Echo Dot and Google Home. Apple's speaker will be launching in the U.S., U.K., and Australia in December, with additional markets to come next year.

The Echo, released in 2015, and Google Home, released previous year, were the first entrants in a promising market.

However, Apple has a well-established reputation for keeping its app ecosystem and platforms under tight control, so developers hoping for more open smart home ecosystems such as Google Home with the Google Assistant and the Amazon Echo Show with Alexa, may be sorely disappointed. At $349 it's priced substantially higher than the $175 Echo and $129 Google Home. And Apple is also getting its say in the matter.

At this conference, Apple also launched other new products and updated softwares.

Apple made a major fintech play that shouldn't be underestimated. It will allow users to automatically block auto-play videos by detecting videos that shouldn't be playing when you open a webpage to read an article, for example. The HomePod will be available starting in December, initially in Australia, the United Kingdom and the US.

"It's the biggest brain inside a speaker", Apple marketing head Phil Schiller proclaimed.
