Students Can Now Apply for NY State's Free College Tuition Program

NY college students can apply for the state's free tuition plan beginning Wednesday.

We've been hearing about it for a months now, but today is the day middle class families can start to apply for the free SUNY and CUNY college tuition program known as the Excelsior Scholarship.

The applications process for SUNY and CUNY students seeking free college tuition is now open, officials said.

The Excelsior Scholarship, which Cuomo signed into law alongside Hillary Clinton in April, is taking applications from students whose families make up to $100,000 a year - a threshold that will increase to $125,000 when the program is fully phased in in 2019.

More than 90,000 students have expressed interest in the scholarship, Fuller said.

The College of Charleston Board of Trustees is raising the cost of attendance by less than 3 percent for in-state and out-of-state students in the 2017-2018 academic year. "We are encouraging students to examine all of their options, and for those who think they may qualify for the Excelsior Scholarship we are urging them to visit the HESC web site for the latest details". Students receiving the scholarship are required to go to college full time.

College president Anne Kress says the drop in enrollment is being seen around the country.

The New York State Higher Education Services Corporation is administering the program. "It (the Excelsior Scholarship) doesn't help part-time students and it doesn't help students that want to attend private universities and colleges".

The scholarship has a strict deadline of July 21.
