Study found 1/3 of the world is overweight

This equates to one-third of the world's population carrying excess weight, fueled by urbanization, poor diets and reduced physical activity. Egypt topped the list for adult obesity at about 35 percent, while the lowest rates were in Bangladesh and Vietnam, respectively, at 1 percent.

Worldwide, 2.2 billion adults and children suffer from health problems related to being overweight or obese, according to a new study.

Almost a third of the world's population is obese or overweight and an increasing number of people are dying of related health problems in a "disturbing global public health crisis", a study said on Monday.

An increasing number globally are dying from health problems linked to being overweight, such as cardiovascular disease, said the study, published Monday in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Nearly 108 million children and more than 600 million adults weighed in as obese, having a body mass index (BMI) above 30, said the research that covered 195 countries.

The data showed that 2.2 billion adults and children were either overweight or obese - that's one-third of the global population.

"Those half-serious New Year's resolutions to lose weight should become year-round commitments to lose weight and prevent future weight gain", Murray said.

For the current report, the worldwide consortium of GBD researchers analyzed trends in the global prevalence of overweight and obesity between 1980 and 2015 among children and adults, and evaluated patterns of BMI-associated deaths and disability-adjusted life-years according to age and sex in 195 countries from 1990 through 2015.

The study was based on the latest data provided by the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study, which tracks the impact of more than 300 types of pathology and injury in 133 countries.

According to the World Health Organisation, obesity has more than doubled since 1980, reaching epidemic proportions. The 25 years of data used for this study reveals that obesity has doubled since 1980, something the researchers say could be the result of the way affordable yet nutrient-deficient processed foods spreading throughout the world.

-China had the largest number of obese children, with 15 million.

The U.S. accounts for more than 33 percent of that number.

Obesity levels have risen in all countries, irrespective of their income level, meaning the issue is not simply down to wealth, the authors say in the paper. "The food environment seems to be the main driver of obesity".

"Over the past decade, numerous interventions have been evaluated, but very little evidence exists about their long-term effectiveness", said Dr. Ashkan Afshin, assistant professor of global health at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, who led the research.

Researchers say they will work closely with the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization to help control the global consequences of obesity improve public health.

Of those deaths, more than 40 percent involved people deemed non-obese - indicating that being overweight, even without being obese, is leading to millions of premature deaths.
