Tehran condemns Trump's 'repugnant' comment about Isis attack

Police officers run to take position around Iran's parliament building after an assault of several attackers, in Tehran, Iran, Wednesday, June 7, 2017. Trump said the U.S. would "grieve and pray" for the victims, but added: "We underscore that states that sponsor terrorism risk falling victim to the evil they promote".

Foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif dismissed what he called the "repugnant White House statement". "Iranian people reject such United States claims of friendship".

Gunmen in Tehran opened fire inside Iran's parliament building and near a shrine devoted to Ayatollah Khomeini, killing at least 12 people and injuring another 43, according to Iranian officials.

Khamenei added that Iran, which is helping Syrian President Bashar Assad fight rebels that include Islamic State fighters, had prevented worse attacks through its foreign policy.

After Iranian security forces killed Abu Aisha along with a number of other group members in western Iran and dismantled their cell, five terrorists escaped from the country, the intelligence ministry's statement reads.

"The Revolutionary Guards have always proven that they will never allow the blood of innocents to be spilt without revenge", they said in a statement. Saadat notes that, according to reports, when during the siege of Iran's parliament some of those present began shouting, "Death to America!" an official admonished those who started the chant.

The U.S. has designated Iran a state sponsor of terrorism since 1984.

"We see Saudi fingerprints in supporting terrorists in Syria and Iraq and the world believes that the Saudi ... ideology is behind terrorist movements", he added.

"In this case, since we do not want to make slogans and unsubstantiated remarks, it is early to say that it was from the Saudi Arabia".

In twin terrorist attacks Wednesday, militants stormed Iran's parliament and the tomb of the country's spiritual leader.

Gunmen armed with Kalashnikovs entered Parliament yesterday morning.

Two Sunni militant groups, Jaish al-Adl and Jundallah, have been also waging an insurgency in Iran, mostly in remote areas, for nearly a decade. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the assault.

Those comments - along with Iran's vow to avenge the 17 killed - threatened to escalate the feud that's divided the oil-rich Gulf region into increasingly hostile camps and fueled several of the Middle East's most intractable conflicts. Trump's statement is "counter-productive and further narrows the opportunity for engagement between the U.S. and Iran on countering a common enemy", said Ellie Geranmayeh, senior fellow with the European Council on Foreign Relations.

In a statement, Trump expressed sympathy for the victims of the Tehran attacks but also implied that Iran is itself a sponsor of terrorism, saying, "We underscore that states that sponsor terrorism risk falling victim to the evil they promote". There, four attackers, including a suicide bomber, killed a security guard and wounded four other people.
