Theresa May to form minority government after poll setback

Davis, who said he backed Prime Minister Theresa May's decision to call an early election in April, said the Tories "need to get on with the job" of governing the country.

The prime minister was asked if the public could be certain her new Government could last five years with her as leader. The opposite has happened, she has been dealt a weak hand, having lost the majority in the parliament.

Before the election there had been widespread speculation in the British media that Mrs May would replace Chancellor Philip Hammond if she won a large majority. While the Northern Irish party will support the Conservative on key votes in parliament without an official deal of coalition, they are reportedly hoping for increased funding for the province as well as concessions for former British soldiers in return.

Meanwhile, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the early results showed May had lost her mandate and called for her to resign.

"We want to negotiate quickly, we want to stick to the time plan, and so at this point I don't think there is anything to suggest these negotiations can not start as was agreed".

The campaign began with a clear lead for May and the Conservatives, reinforcing a perception that Labour's Jeremy Corbyn was too left-wing to attract widespread support.

Labour under him polled 40 per cent of the vote, the highest for the party since 1970, and only slightly behind Ms May's Tories.

Britain's Parliament has 650 seats and 326 are needed to produce an overall victor.

Britain's typically right-wing press savaged May over the election outcome, questioning whether she will be able to remain in power after a result that leaves her reliant on uniting rival factions within her party to deliver Brexit.

May had called the election in order to consolidate her mandate to negotiate Britain's exit from the Europe Union.

With 649 of 650 seats declared, the Conservatives had won 318 seats.

Reacting to the result, European Council president Donald Tusk said there was now "no time to lose" over Brexit, while the European Parliament's chief negotiator Guy Verhofstadt said it was an "own goal" and made negotiations more "complicated".

"We are in not quite a political stalemate, but we are in a situation of turmoil just when the Conservative said they wanted stability because of the Brexit debates and Brexit arguments", he added. He is committed to heeding the results of Britain's European Union membership referendum a year ago in which 52 percent voted Leave against 48 percent in favour of Remain. As one teaching student at the University of London told VOA, "I think most of us here were against Brexit previous year".
