Timeline: How events unfolded in London's latest attack

Members of the public leave the area at London Bridge on June 3, 2017 in London, England.

Five people were killed in London when an Islamist extremist drove a vehicle into pedestrians before crashing into a barrier outside parliament and fatally stabbing a police officer inside the grounds.

Eyewitnesses to the attack described seeing a white van travelling at high speed along London Bridge, hitting pedestrians, before crashing close to the Barrowboy and Banker pub.

A confusing situation is developing in London on Saturday night as there are reports of at least one person killed and numerous injured after a van reportedly hit pedestrians on London Bridge in the heart of the British capital. Other witnesses said they saw at least two people who had been stabbed in a restaurant close to Borough Market.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May addressed the media in front of 10 Downing Street on Sunday morning, saying "Enough is enough" as she spoke on the third terror attack Britain has experienced in three months. Some suffered life-threatening injuries. The attackers were shot and killed by police.

This is the third attack in Britain in as many months.

Ariana Grande and other music stars were due to give a benefit concert at Manchester's Old Trafford cricket ground on Sunday evening to raise funds for victims of the concert bombing and their families.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the latest attack in London.

"Perpetrators are inspired to attack ... by copying one another and often using the crudest means of attack."

In March, a knife-wielding man went on a deadly rampage in the heart of Britain's seat of power, plowing a vehicle into pedestrians on London's Westminster Bridge before stabbing a police officer to death inside the gates of Parliament.

"While the recent attacks are not connected by common networks, they are connected in one important sense, they are bound together by the single, evil ideology of Islamist extremism that preaches hatred sows division and promotes sectarianism".

The U.S. State Department said the United States condemns the attacks. It had been raised to critical after the Manchester attack, then lowered again days later. We don't believe there is, but we must make absolutely certain of that.

"We don't believe there are additional elements" at large, said Home Secretary Amber Rudd.

Secondly, she said we need to shut down the "safe space" the internet is providing to terrorists, calling for worldwide action to regulate cyberspace. May said the vote would go ahead as planned on Thursday.

Most of the main political parties suspended election campaigning on Sunday, but May said this would resume on Monday. It is unclear how the unprecedented violence in the run-up to the election will impact voter sentiment.

"My message to Londoners and visitors to our great city is to be calm and vigilant today", Mr Khan said. French and Spanish citizens were among the wounded.

Assistant Police Commissioner Mark Rowley said the assailants were wearing what looked like explosive vests, which were later found to be fake. Police stormed in and helped escort people out.

Alex Shellum was in The Mudlark pub, close to London Bridge, at around 10pm when a woman in her early 20s "staggered into the pub". What sounded like gunfire rang out five to 10 minutes later, he said.

"I hear maybe six to eight gunshots and screams unlike I've ever heard before".

"The operation is ongoing so we are finding out more about who these three are", he said.

"People started running and screaming, and the van crashes into the railing behind".

She listed four areas where she said change needed to take place. He said it took him 20 minutes to carry her across the bridge, stumbling all the way.

"It was really scary", he said.

Elsbeth Smedley, a witness, said a man ran into Elliot's cafe in Borough Market and stabbed two people before rushing out.

"They kept coming to try to stab me. they were stabbing everyone".

"I think it was someone on the ground floor but I've never seen them". They were stabbing everyone.
