Trump Again Refutes Comey's Claims

Sessions is the most senior member of Trump's administration caught up in the controversy over whether associates that the president colluded with Russian Federation to help Trump win the election.

Trump's last statement, that there would have been nothing wrong if he had told Comey to drop the investigation, is the reason that none of this may matter in terms of the ongoing investigation.

At a White House press conference last month, a reporter asked Donald Trump, "Did you at any time urge former FBI Director James Comey in any way, shape, or form to close or to back down the investigation into Michael Flynn?".

Almost 20 million U.S. television viewers tuned in to the explosive testimony. He said he can also be interviewed by the special counsel who investigates Trump associates' ties to Russia, Robert Mueller.

The US president was asked by a journalist if he would be willing to give his version of events under oath.

"One hundred percent", he responded.

"Nobody would ask a man he hardly knew to pledge loyalty to him", he said.

"Who would do that?".

With a single tweet, Trump also castigated Comey as "a leaker" for giving an account of his conversation with the president to a law professor who shared it with a news outlet. I mean, think of it.

The argument from Trump and his allies is supposed to be that the president didn't say what Comey claims, but the argument from Donald Trump Jr.is that the president did make those comments, his father's denials notwithstanding, though they shouldn't be seen as controversial.

"You are going to be very disappointed when you hear the answer", he said a bit cryptically.

"I'll tell you about it over a very short period of time", Trump said, referring to the tapes. "I'm not hinting anything".

So far there is no evidence that tapes of Comey and Trump's conversations actually exist outside of the White House, creating an air of mystery around the idea and distracting from the many already damning allegations around the Trump administration. The House intelligence committee is seeking any tapes of the conversations.

The Secret Service handled recording systems within the White House for past presidents, including Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy.

Questions over whether such tapes exist have been swirling ever since Trump tweeted on May 12, "James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!"

The president repeated that Comey's testimony had vindicated him of wrongdoing before adding "some of the things that he said just weren't true".

US President Donald Trump has characterised the leak of former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey's memo of their conversations "cowardly" and suggested the act could have legal consequences.
