Trump said the decision would come this week, but didn't offer more details.

Former President Obama formally entered the USA into the Paris Agreement in September of 2016. He is set to meet on Wednesday with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, the former Exxon head, who is for remaining in the agreement.

While traveling overseas last week, Trump was repeatedly pressed to stay in the deal by European leaders and the Vatican. Embattled tech contemporary and Uber CEO Travis Kalanick withdrew after Trump's temporary travel ban on people from certain countries in the Middle East stirred controversy.

As of May 2017, the Paris accord has been signed by 195 members of the United Nations convention on climate change, and has been ratified by 147 of them.

Nancy Pelosi, opposition leader in the House of Representatives, said the decision would be a "stunning abdication of American leadership" and "a threat to the planet". "In walking away from this agreement, the President is denying scientific truths, removing safeguards that protect our health and our environment, protecting polluters and their dirty energy agenda, and threatening our national and global security".

Trump has several options, climate experts said.

Everyone cautioned that no decision was final until Trump announced it.
