Trump slams Qatar for funding terror as Tillerson urges calm

Foreigners residing in Qatar and in possession of a Qatari residence visa would also not be eligible for visa on arrival in the UAE, Etihad spokesman said in an email.

Five countries - Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, Yemen and Bahrain - cut diplomatic ties with Qatar on Monday over allegations that Doha is supporting Islamist groups and courting Iran.

Qatar has strongly denied funding extremist groups but remains a key financial patron of the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip and has been the home of exiled Hamas official Khaled Mashaal since 2012.

In an interview published by Saudi-owned Asharq al Awsat newspaper, Bahraini Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed al-Khalifa said conditions posed by the four countries for a resolution of the crisis were "crystal clear".

Apart from breaking diplomatic ties, some Gulf countries closed their airspace.

The dispute has sparked the worst diplomatic crisis in the Arab world in years and raised fears it will cause further instability in an already volatile region.

Kuwait - which unlike most of its fellow Gulf Cooperation Council members has not cut off ties with Qatar - has been leading efforts to mediate. Qatar's USA ambassador, Meshal bin Hamad Al Thani, told The Associated Press his country is counting on Washington to persuade Saudi Arabia and others to back down.

On Wednesday Saudi Arabia issued Qatar with a list of 10 demands it must meet, including curbs on the freedom of state-funded broadcaster al-Jazeera, which its Gulf neighbours have accused of slander and "fake news", orders to stop "interfering" in foreign countries' affairs and to cease any funding or support for terrorist organisations. He cited the potential danger to U.S. military operations at the al-Udeid air base, the centerpiece of U.S. Central Command operations in the region, and urged Qatar to find common ground with its neighbors.

Turkey, which works closely with Qatar in the energy sector, has walked a fine line between defending Qatar and abstaining from openly antagonising Saudi Arabia.

Iran and Qatar share the world´s largest gas field, an offshore site the Iranians call South Pars and the Qataris call the North Dome. Air, sea and land routes into the Qatari peninsula are blocked, which means that the food imports that Doha relies on to feed its population will need to rely on other seaports to unload their product.

A number of smaller countries allied with Saudi Arabia have joined in taking steps to varying degrees against Qatar, and on Thursday Chad announced that it had recalled its ambassador to Doha.

This time, however, the national-security crisis concerns the Arab monarchies straddling the Persian Gulf, which is perhaps the only area of stability in a region that is anything but stable. While the Saudis unsuccessfully tried to prop up the autocracy of Hosni Mubarak, Qatar's support for Egypt's Arab Spring and the Muslim Brotherhood, which was elected to power in Egypt's first ever democratic elections, was largely geopolitical. "It will be quite complex to disentangle, but we are intent on saying we can not go back to the status quo ante", Gargash, the UAE minister, told Reuters in an interview.

A senior Emirati official insisted on Wednesday that Gulf Arab states were not seeking regime change in Doha, as tensions built in a bitter feud between Qatar and its neighbors.
